  • Weren't you a tiny bit suspicious when they started asking you about what you think of the Smiths and the state of the record industry?

He doesn't like to admit that he's a sucker for it....

"can't stop myself...can't...say...can't hold out much longer.....

"record labels are filled with morons"

  • What are the chances that Morrissey will release a single on this site? Seems as if he thinks that'd be too easy for us in the end. That we wouldn't have searched and waited long enough for it...but...I must say, that we have, haven't we?

I'd say a single here would go a long way.

  • The wind keeps blowing and the sun runs like it has some place to be only end up in our faces again. Moz, please find a way to make melodies live and give life to lyrics lying motionless on tabiture. Perform the duty of making it possible to record your music. Its not with the music industry that you will find the idealism in your songs. One must drive the road despite the bumps or no progress can be made toward the goal at the end of the journey. If we keep our eye on that prize at the end of the journey, the would-be theives of freedom will lose their grip on our will to be what we want to be.

  • First off, does this seem like a bogus interview to anyone else? I realize that this is a reputable magazine, but the interview was conducted over the phone. I've never really read an interview where Morrissey was so frank, and so willing to go on and on about the Smiths. The word choices he uses just seem a bit off. I don't know.

Second, I think that Broccoli Spears reference was funny thought I'd be happier if Morrissey had never heard of the skank.

Finally, It appears as though Morrissey could have had a Moby produced record except he's holding out for more $ which is a bit distressing. It makes sense, both guys have the utmost respect for animals. It could be quite a collaboration.

  • I would like to comment on Morrissey's answer to whats going to change the music scene from all the Brocolli Spears and Backstreet Boys and not to mention that terrible rage rap rock that seem to dominate "alternative" radio and pushes itself as none-commercial and playing by their own rules (Can someone say, "Yeah right, Limp Biskit are truly indeed music rebels")

Morrissey continues to say it isn't going to take something like punk or be moved by a swastika. Or not even cross-dressing rockers ala New York Dolls I personally agree. He insists it's going to take "...intelligent, understanding, and compassionate people." I couldn't agree much more. I think we are in the beginning stages of the rebirth of very intelligent music. It's my opinion that we are going to see a lot of bands in the next 5 years praising The Smiths as the reason and inspriation for playing. And I see it with a lot of the new Hispanic/Mexican kids out here in the LA area. I truely see a splurge of new bands, primarly headed by Hispanic youth, reciting the Smiths and Morrissey as their big influence. And honestly have great potential and a rebirth to the sounds of old, where one can actually sing out feelings and play music that is, by Morrissey's account "affordable".

Bands like Silent Gray, Pastilla and even Idelwild tell me their hope out there. I think there's going to be a change in the next 5 years and I see it happening in LA by the Hispanic youth. Does anyone agree with me or am I just dreaming. By anymeans I happen to play in a band and thank the music gods for the sound of the Smiths and the voice and words of Morrissey.

  • Well, we all know what it is going on, and we know that for a quite long time.
We, the fans, and Morrissey and his songs are a whole, a project to be continued - we want to see that happening.
Perhaps one should try to trace the trajectory of pop-music since the 50s up to now to understand why the record companies are showing their ugliest faces at present. During the 60s I believe it was forceful that they were a part of the "revolution" - there was little space left beyond that feeling anyway, the "changes" appeared to be so real and economically meaningful anyway, and there are always some much problems when a true feeling can be made profitable, but even then they would not dare to contradict such a strong movement, because everyone was in that.
During the 80s and 90s politics and equally meaningful topics appeared rather as individual issues, like the (individual) right to disagree, the whole thing became much more intellectual because when individuality plays such an important role, to agree or disagree becomes almost a philosophical matter.
I disagree completely with those who say that Morrissey represents how establishment conquered space in the 80s, well, saying that is failing to understand it all. If the spirit of changing was no longer a collective one but continued to exist under an individual shape, it also means that the weight is heavier now, and somehow responsibility increased a lot. Now, to be responsible does not mean not to be revolutionary, even if that does not seem to follow the school of the 60s. Indeed, Morissey says NO as a person. And he is perhaps the symbol of true intellectuality, self-awareness and depth that had to emerge from the 60s. And yes, that's now a struggle because not everybody desires to reach such depths or to carry so much self-consciousness throughout one's life. We love Morrissey now - but the rest of the world will need much more time to understand who he is, or who we are - those changes are certainly slower and more difficult ones.

And last but not least :) Thanks Razor for offering me a copy of your Mojo magazine, and thanks Claire for bringing it from England for my birthday :)

  • One, rather lame interview conducted over the phone. That's all we get. I really don't know if he's got it in him to release another disc. If he did, I think it would have been released.
I love Morrissey, but will be frequenting here less. Nothing of value is ever posted anymore. No offence to David T by any means. It's just that nothing is happening and hasn't for years. Who cares about a small segment on VH1? Who cares about that ugly fuck Boz. There is new music out now like "Gorillaz" and such that is a better waste of time than finding solace in amassed dust. No disrespect to any of you, I like all of you (except Cindy) but must move on. Maybe in six months from now I'll check back and see something more than nothing being posted.

  • This comment is from Damian Morgan; [email protected] .Quite often I read comments on this site and find the views of fans incredible. There was a comment earlier calling the Mojo interview 'bogus', for instance. There is this atmosphere of distrust and the fear of misinformation that surrounds everything that old Mozzer does, so that even the plain truth is taken with a pinch of salt.
I have some extremely rare Morrissey memorabilia that I tried to sell last year (clothing worn by him in videos) and I couldn't sell it because no one would believe that I could possibly have a)known Morrissey and b)obtained personal items.
Even accounts of meetings with Morrissey are greeted with disbelief - "wow, you mean he was shopping? Breathing? Walking in the open air? I don't believe you! Liar LIAR!!"
Another thing, Morrissey is a businessman, as well as being a fantastic music icon.
My mate knows Mike Joyce really well, and what went on on the Smiths days and during/after the court case was amazing, and many fans would never believe how ruthless Morrissey can be. Also the whole Elvez debacle-Morrissey was asking him to pay $400 dolars per night to play, and issiting that he go on stage a full TWO hours before the main event. So Elvez pulled out.
So, fans (and I am a fan too, been one for 17 years), get real. He's human, makes mistakes, treats people well/badly. He eats, shits, farts, belches, swears and is 100% human. DEAL WITH IT!

  • Why don't we all just admit that
Morrissey has forgotten about us because he's rich. It's perfectly obvious that he has treated his fans with the same ruthless calculation as his numerous managers. This is clearly a fundemental flaw in his character that is confirmed time and time again by anyone that has known the guy for any significant period of time.

    Objectives of Morrissey :

    Wealth
    Power
    Adoration
    Influence

    Mission accomplished..

Just like any other 'celebrity', Morrissey hungered fame, fame, fatal fame not the urge to forge an 'understaning' with his fans.

Be thankful for the music he produced, but soak up the plethora of musical talent that exists right now.

    Side Bar:

Remember, music is the deepest of all arts and goes much deeper. Please don't dig yourselves into a shallow grave by just listening to the
Smiths. I can't express how much you are missing out if this is the case.

I'll meet you at the cementry gates..... but did you listen ? No, reeaaly listen?

      2) Trying to influence other's point of view
      3) Trying to twist Morrissey's expression in the ugliest possible way.

      - I doubt you even went to any of his concerts or ever established any contact with him, otherwise you'd see how foolish and shallow your post is.

Envy, envy, fatal envy. Take my advice and try this trick somewhere if you must to, but don't think it's a new one and people are not aware of that. Other advice would be trying to add some contents to what you say, but the wound is too large to be healed by now. And no, I doubt that people hear only listen to the Smiths. Why did you presume that?

  • "The reason I picked morrissey, because in my opinion morrissey just embodies every horrible trait that a human can possibly possess. I mean he's British he doesn't have to work very hard. I mean they have a handicap anyway. You notice all the great musicians who are English, moved. Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward the members of Black Sabbath one of the worlds most greatest bands, even though they are English. They moved to America which is great.
I just love this video because it captures our hero morrissey lounging about on lonely isolated terrain in this hilarious shirt and I just,...when ever I see the video of ‘November Spawned A Monster’ I’m always here with a twinge of regret that it was not I who got to direct this video because in the last scene morrissy would just be dowsed with gasoline and set on fire. And then we'd just get some wild sound that could just catch the sound of this hair and the polyester shirt burning into his skin and his last cry’s on earth. And what we could do is we could take that and put a house beat behind it, put it on a 12 inch and sell it to all these emaciated kids with bad teeth, who don't have enough vitamin c, who never get outside. It's like, morrissy cheer up, it's not that bad. When you have as much money as that guy does, I'd be happy. You know David Lee Roth once said money can't buy you happiness but it can buy you a boat big enough to sail right up next to it (laughs) so I think the guy should cheer up.
So I think we should play this video today to show everybody, you know the traits they shouldn’t cultivate. Look at morrissy and just be,... jump up and down in joy that you're not him. That's why. And I know that this might be a little cruel and I might of bashed our beautiful friends over there in Britain and you know I really don't care. I really don't care. Personally I wouldn't want to burn him up. I would like to tie him to a chair and tease him until he pees his pants and promises never to do it again."

But beware- I ordered mine in late March/early April, and din't get it until almost May. They had shipping problems of some sort. But- if you don't have it, get it. It is worth the wait.
