I just wanted to let everyone know that Georgia State's college station, 88.5 WRAS Atlanta had Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music in the studio on Saturday. On the subject of Roxy Music's influence over modern bands Ferry stated, "I believe that sort-of sad chap, Morrissey, is a progeny of mine... though I don't think he is nearly as virile."

On another note he later added, "I'm fairly certain that Robert Smith, of the Cure, is a descendant somewhere down the line..."

  • The big difference is that Moz and The Cure do not charge their fans $80+ for tickets to their shows. Let's make it reasonable for the fans BrYan!

  • i can't say cure merchandise is all that cheap...i think i'll be paying the same to see roxy this year as i did for the cure last year...but regardless, roxy music has had such an extreme impact on music. bryan ferry's solo career hasn't really had the brilliance of moz's solo career but that doesn't make what he did with roxy music any less important.

  • A very great band. I still listen to them today, but I do not see that much influence in The Smiths or Morrissey's work, Now I see the influence in such bands as Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, et al. but that is a discussion for another day (and another web site).

  • Maybe some of you don’t know this. Soon after he left The Smiths, Johnny Marr wrote the music for a Bryan Ferry song called The Right Stuff a single from Bete Noire LP, 1987. It seems that Ferry’s record company did the approach to Marr. In fact, asked about what he thought of The Smiths, Ferry said (in Smash Hits magazine): “I didn’t know much about them before working with Johnny. I heard a song on the radio once… I’m being miserable now, or something. I suppose it was quite good…”. Moz always mentions Roxy Music, as well as Bowie and T.Rex as the bands he used to like in the 70s. Personally, I highly recommend Roxy’s 1973 Stranded LP.

  • bryan ferry adds a new dimension to the word crap.
I've personally no use for him, his comments, or his music. Judging from the way he seems to come across in interviews, I'd say he's pretty full of himself.
By the way, the Smiths don't sound as though they were influenced by Roxy MUZAK whatsoever. THANK GOD!

  • While I won't say that Bryan Fery sucks (he has a very good voice), I have always thought that Roxy Music have been given way too much credit. I am so glad that Eno said no to the "Let's make some money because we're poor" tour". I guess anything can bring a band back these days. I would love to see the Smiths again but I am so glad that they do not get back together for the wrong reasons.

  • I will forever be in love with the early Roxy
Music albums. However, I think Bryan is severely
misguided in what he says these days! I think
Eno is who was most influential in that group.
Most especially on groups such as Pulp. I can hear
a slight Eno influence in the guitar works on
certain Morrissey songs like "Hairdresser On Fire"
and "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" and also in the odd
synthesized space spiralling keyboard in "The Last
Of The Famous International Playboys" But beyond
that I don't think there are any Roxy connections.
Bryan just had too much wine that day or something!

  • I know that Bryan was just having a joke there. He's always been one for the sharp, witty comments, but they have to be merely taken in jest. He's stated before of his great pleasure in hearing of important artists citing him as an influence, although he often makes a joke of it to hide his great modesty.
