Greg Dean Schmitz writes:

The cameo role of Morrissey in Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People" has been cast, to newcomer James Cartwright.

The site has a photo of Cartwright as Morrissey; and it's well, pretty dreadful. I suspect I'm not going to be the first fan to say "Ew" on sight of that photo. Hmmm. What's up with the hair? He looks like Kramer from "Seinfeld."

Having said that, I've got high hopes for the film, which sounds interesting... spanning the history of Factory Records and the Hacienda. All current events are eventually history, I guess.

JAMES CARTWRIGHT

Bless, he's playing Morrissey...

24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE is going to be a hive of cameos. In virtually every scene, there is a face from television, film, or from the true history behind the film itself. This issue:

JAMES CARTWRIGHT

Stephen Patrick Morrissey, possibly the world's most famous recluse, was marginally more on the scene in the late 70s, where we find his character weaving in and out of a couple of scenes in the movie. The period is pre-Smiths, and the young M is desperately trying to get the attention of the industry.

The real Mozzer

Sprightly James is also newcomer, having only recently made his feature debut in Danny Boyle's eagerly awaited Mancunian tale 'Vacuuming Completely Nude In Paradise'. James wasn't too aware of the extensive and possibly seminal Smiths back-catalogue: "I wasn't a big fan before the film, but I started getting into it" explains James. "I've started listening to it in my own time now, I enjoy it, it's fantastic!"

James is in fact, James Jr, as his father is none other than northern über-playwright, Jim Cartwright, writer of classic stage plays such as 'Road', 'Two' and 'The Rise and Fall of Little Voice' (later made into a smash movie, starring Jane Horrocks).

James is Morrissey

James, who will next be seen in ITV's A&E, sadly has not had a chance to speak to his real-life counterpart, with current speculation unable to agree on which continent the real Morrissey currently resides. "The good thing is he's such an inspiration to so many people, but that's why it's got to be just right." says James. "I've not had a chance to speak to him. I'd like to, to see what he thinks about me doing it."

  • It looks like this guy was a pretty wise choice to me. I do agree that they could do better with the hair though. His eyebrows should be bushier too! Other than that, not too shabby.

  • Lets face it, this guy is probably going to be unjustly roasted by some of you guys there. From what I've seen of early Moz hairstyles, he doesn't look that far off.

Anyhow, before you carp, spare a thought for Ben Kingsley who played Gandhi. Some people thought it was a bit off having him played by a white guy wearing make up. Some really devout religious guys took the view that Gandhi could in fact only properly be portrayed by a pure white point of light.

And the songs we sing, they're not supposed to mean a thing...
  • After reading the many other posts made to this site, one can assume that there will be 100 + insults to this character whom only 5 may have ever met. Please, let us not see jealousy rear it's ugly head again. Let's be thankful that they didn't leave Morrissey out of the film, and support any negatives with a positive. Regards...

  • MMMM not too bad (Score:2, Interesting)

The brow is ok, the chin is quite right. Mmmm...
I'd like to see the film...the way he walks, the way he looks at people, the shyness, the arrogance, the passion, the we-are-on-a-mission way of doing it all...who knows? perhaps this guy'll reflect it all better than we think he would.

  • Just wondering...is this film only coming out to theaters in Europe? Is this an independent or more commercial endeavor cuz i'd love to see it here in the states! The resemblance isn't half bad either. Maybe a little more of a quiff, though?? Anyone who knows the answer to said inquiry please reply!

  • Pretty dreadful? I'd like to see what you look like, mate. OK: he's not exactly Moz- he's better looking for starters- but it could have been a lot LOT worse. I'd shag him.

...don't make fun of me later... cos I'm just lost...
  • Anyone have a listing for other actors in the film? Also can anyone shed any light on a Joy Division film?

    Cheers

  • If we're going purely on looks, I think Michael St. Gerard would've been a closer match. He played Elvis in "Elvis: the Early Years". You may recognize him as the summer school drama teacher from Beverly Hills 90210 as well--though maybe not admittedly >:)

    Look for yourself:
