David Alice writes:

PART 2 of THE DIANA-MORRISSEY PHENOMENON deals exclusively with Morrissey's lyrics on THE QUEEN IS DEAD. You'll find the link on my new front page at http://home.cogeco.ca/~veganmozfan/

  • Okay, at first I admit that it was pretty funny to think about this sort of "illusion" David had created with the Morrissey/Diana link...I must say though, the more David Alice digs, the more convincing it is. BUT I am not saying that I totally and utterly believe that Moz has predicted Princess Di's death or any such thing, but all the work that David has put into this shouldn't be written off with snide remarks and degrading comments like last time. This is something David A. has chosen to share with us, this interesting read if you will. And interesting it definately is!

Keep it up David, it gets better and better!

  • As the author of THE DIANA-MORRISSEY PHENOMENON, I would like to take this opportunity to ask all of you die-hard Morrissey fans if you think Morrissey enjoys my work.
I'd hate to think that it is offending him or causing him any discomfort.

  • Dear David

I liked this installment much better than the first. It's easy too see you have put some hard work into this most recent update, where as the first one seemed rash and easily brushed off. Much more compelling. The next update should be fast(if you don't mind my 3 cents), people should not be allowed to sleep on it, even if you do not get as much reaction on moz-solo as the last time, I am sure everyone won't be able to resist (despite their violent reaction to your site)to take a peak at it. The "who and why" ought to be interesting, I for one look forward to it.
Who knows the tabloids may catch hold of this, set it all ablaze and one David Alice is responsible for Morrissey getting signed again.
After all stranger things have happened, wouldn't you agree?
PS I can fantasize too cant I?

  • not to sound like i've been living under a rock, but i never even heard of this diana-morrissey phenomena thing, but it looks like david has done his homework on this one! what an interesting concept to think that our moz could predict such a tragedy before it even occurred. i always thought "the queen" that moz was referring to on "the queen is dead" album was the real queen of england and not diana. did moz ever have bad feelings towards the princess of wales also? just curious...anyway, good work! keep us posted!!

  • David, good job.
This installment is much cleaner and consice, you almost have me convinced, almost.
However I disagree with your characterzation of meaning behind at least two songs, "I know its over" and Some Girls are Bigger than others.

In I know its over, the verse about the loud loutish lover, and the veiled bride, I took more as an aside, from the major theme of unrequited love/life of the author in the face of his passing life.

As for some girls are bigger than others, I saw it not as a song about popular women, but something more comical. For example take, Some men are bigger than others. As a symbol of manhood, its certainly been an obsession of the modern age, perhaps its always been. I saw some girls are bigger than others as a play on this.

Certainly the obvious refrence would be to the chest, as that is the traditionaly the female equivalent where size is measured. However I think Morrissey intended to compare the same yardstick to women as for men. So when he says "Some girls mothers, are bigger than other girls mothers" What piece of anatomy makes a women a mother? Yes. Thats how I always saw it. You could see it literally as physical weight, but the preceding verses seem to point more to a sexual refrence.
"As Antony said to Cleopatra, as he opened a crate of Ale.." A man seducing a women over alchol (sic).
From the ice age to the dole age, there is but ONE concern.
Many have said that all civilzation and yearning man has done, has been but an attempt to get a little tail. Former Presidents bear witness to this.
Or in the live version there is the added verse
"On the shop board, this calender, as obvious as snow, as if we didnt know"
Well whats in the calender? Women in swimsuits, if anything at all. Its so obvious,
Some girls are bigger than others.
    So to me its either,
The neather region, the chest, or perhaps the beauty of women, that the song is about.
That was always my take, I wonder what others thought it meant?

  • So someone let poor Mr. Alice out of his padded room and backwards fitting jacket long enough to type some more rubbish. Bravo! I really don't know whether you truly believe the garbage that you write or if you just a great fan of fiction. Either way it will keep me and several people from bitching about the fact that Morrissey doesn't have a recording deal for a few days anyways. Cheers Mr. Alice and here's to not seeing anymore of you rubbish again.

ps. I perticularly didn't like your assessment of "I Know It's Over".

      • I just didn't off the cuff dismiss this man as a waco. To do so would be folly. I did read what he has to say as well as discuss this with several different people that I know and who are "in the know" as to what Mr. Alice is writing about. We didn't all come to the same assessment that I had of Mr. Alice (that he is not all quite there) but that he is writing fiction and not for fiction sake. Needless to say that the Smiths took great care in knocking the royals at every opportunity. He chooses "The Queen is Dead" as the album that he says proves everything. Intersting that he chooses the album that has the most songs that have to do with their distain of royalty to prove his point. Mind you anyone with enough time on his hands and enough ingenuity (and I will give him credit for that much) can come up with a similar conclusion.

No Sheila, I didn't dismiss the man out of hand and thank you for my right to an opinion, as I believe that we all have a right to one (including our dear Mr. Alice).

I do appreciate the response though.
