Boy George talks of his hideous encounter with Moz in a Parisian Hotel. (Sunday Express) At the time they were signed to the same label in France... Article goes:
"Afternoon tea was arranged in a quaint hotel and off I swished. I think the swishing was part of the problem because Morrissey hated me on sight. I ended up doing all the talking and wanted the garish carpet to swallow me. I heard later he described me as overbearing, to which I replied, 'sorry for having a personality.'

"Had I been childish I could have gone home and burnt my Smiths records and taken Morrissey's picture off my wall but I continue to buy every solo record Morrissey has made. My favourite is The More You Ignore Me. How apt. I know how it is possible to respect another's artistry and yet dislike how they are."
(article carries on talking about Tony Parson, the writer, no more refs to his majesty...)

And the songs we sing, they're not supposed to mean a thing...
  • When I was in Manchester a few weeks ago I dropped into a Waterstones and flicked through Marc Almonds autobiography. In there he reports a similar set up meeting between him and Moz at a bar or something. It wasn't that they didn't like each other, they just both felt extremely uncomfortable and the conversation was really forceful and embarrassing. The woman who arranged the meeting ended up crying.....

  • Boy George is great - it's so hard to talk to someone when it's an awkward first meeting . . . oh well, better luck next time George . . .

  • I think it's great that Boy George took Morrissey's comment with a grain of salt.
It just shows Moz's music goes further than his personal comments about someone...thankfully!

  • Boy George is brilliant and I love his wit. Personally, being told every day that I'm hyper loquacious, I can see what he means...it's so awkward when you try and keep a conversation lively with no effort from the other side...
Anyway...I do think Boy George is an icon, and he means a lot to this country. Th eproblem is, again, he has a lot to say, and he's a very profound person...and these days people like that are not rated too well.
And he's very brave too, considering the amount of Sh#£% he has been through in his life.

Am I the only one adoring Morrissey and Boy george at the same time?

  • It's just that Moz and Boy are two different types of people. In this case, gay people. So what? I guess Moz does not like queens, and maybe that is because he is so "butch". Well, I dunno....

  • Yes, I think that "Rough Trade" has always meant much more to Morrissey than the name of his former record label, if you catch my drift. Even still, I think that disliking someone else because they're effeminate bespeaks more about your own insecurites -- particularly when gay men hold such prejudices, and so, so many do.

My guess is that Morrissey probably wasn't put off by Boy George's "swishing" (remember's Morrissey's friendship with gender-bender Pete Burns?) and more to do with Morrissey's famous shyness. And, who knows, maybe the Boy was hopped up on smack at the time.

  • I think that Boy George should be indifferent about morrissey and his "attitude" he's has probably one of the best voices in the bussiness and Morrisseey is probably prone to be bias due to his current or past friendship with Pete Burns of Dead or Alive who's relation and queen battle has been long standing with "do you really like to hurt me" himself!.... meowewwwwww, skratch, scratch.

  • They probably just didn't have anything in common, and being that Morrissey is rather reserved and shy, I can see where he'd say that Boy was "overbearing". I mean, I've been in situations like that with my brother's friends (Drag Queens, no doubt), where they had lots to say, but I just didn't. Not because I wasn't interested, but because I'm shy and really couldn't relate. They seemed "overbearing" to me, but I didn't dislike them at all, however, I had no desire to be with them either.
