I think it's pretty much established that the "Melanie" song was a hoax or parody, from what people have written in the comments and also from people who have contacted Boz and Steve Lillywhite. Yesterday I was sent this sound file (900k .wav file), of a Morrissey impersonator telling people that the "Melanie" song is real and was sent on DAT to some DJs. It really does sound like him, but I have confirmed it is fake and have even heard that Morrissey himself finds it humorous.

This reminds me of the time I vaguely remember being around the 1991 or 92 tour when I heard someone would call up unsuspecting fans on the phone, pretending to be Morrissey. Nowadays it's on the internet -- so to those who have mentioned that Morrissey secretly emails them or chats with them on ICQ - no, it's not him.

  • Oh Phoney! Yes, that's quite obvious.

What about "Mortimer" (in English) - any other information?

    Thanks a bunch anyway!!

  • People claiming Morrissey emails or chats to them.... that's pretty funny. Though I can relate to how you can find things confirmed if you really WANT to believe them - it happened to me once. It didn't involve Morrissey though.

  • funny.

The Moz impersonator (though not perfect) should be extremely proud of himself. Yes, I know that some people will be pompous about this, but what an excellent wind up!

  • The wav of the impersonator just brightened my day. That's the funniest thing when someone tries to impersonate our Moz, only to have it confirmed it was false. This whole hoax tooks some good effort from all involved, and when you think of the song "Oh Melanie," those lyrics are cruelly funny. At least it brought out a good discussion on this site last week.

  • i don't know. maybe morrissey should have taken credit for it. it beats anything he's done in while. So what if it's not the greatest production effort, it's still better than alma matters. Takes me back to the We Hate It-era. Fun, quirky, easy to listen to. Why doesn't this person just release an album instead of trying ot pass of his work as someone else's. I'd buy it.

  • I just think that it's great that we can have some fun with hoaxs, fakes whatever. Though it does show up our desperation fro REAL Morrissey stuff....

  • The hoax fella is very poor...go away.
But the fact of the matter is, about 6 years ago i did hear a song on radio 1 with "melanie" in it, and it was by "Morrissey".

It was an exclusive play. So please don't say it didn't happen because it did.

    Thank you...bye bye.

You know I was really fooled and you'd think after hearing him sing for almost 18 years and having attended about a dozen concerts, I would know better. Oh well, yes, I am blind. Or in this case, deaf.

  • Come on guys!!!
It doesn't sound like Moz at all!!!
I have watched/heard a lot of interviews with Morrissey and I would have known that that was fake... it sounded pretty British that's all... Anyway...
    It's funny!

It sounds a little bit like Moz... but it's evident that something's weird...

Not to mention that "bye!" at the end. completely kills the mood.

but the thing that kills me is that these people are trying to fake out a writer of a fanzine.

The voice is so phoney - firstly that hoaxer has distinctive Liverpool accent which is betrayed with the very last word confusion. In fact this is a better impersonation of Bob Geldof than The Man Himself.

Steven's voice is more dulcet, measured and reserved, and has a slight Lancashire lilt.

  • Yes, I wish many of the hoaxes were true just to know what Moz is thinking, or what he's up to. But, even though I've been ridiculed on here before for claiming to know bits and pieces of Moz from a music industry connection I have in L.A., I have also admitted that even though my conection is very powerful ( Like when I met "The Cure"--for real!), on two seperate occasions my connection went out of his way to try his best for me to meet Moz at one of the two "Oye Esteban" concerts I attended. Both times Morrissey (without giving any notice) refused to meet me. I carried around this poster on both flights thinking it was going to happen--ha ha--fat chance! His manager tried her best because my connection is very powerful and it was in her best interest to try. However, she gaurenteed me nothing, and thats just what happened ( She did mail an autograph picture though). Concerning my connection, he didn't like Moz before and he certainly doesn't now--he is used to getting his way. But, he knows I love Moz and when he runs across those who know him, he gives me little pieces of info. on rare occasions--I do love Morrissey and all you fans too!, Yours whooly, Hated For Loving -- P.S. I'm still extremely jealous of all of you who met him when he was signing in L.A. and N.Y.--One Day............
