I came across the Mike Joyce Website today, not sure how current this response from Mike is, but I found it interesting.. I know his site is a link to Moz-solo, but not everyone probably goes there.. So I'll bring it here! To Mike's credit he appears to be very communicative and accessible.. unlike Morrissey! In this extract, Mike responds to several questions on his message board.. (but you'd have to see the questions in some cases to make some sense of some of the responses)... particular reference to Smiths out-takes and rarities caught my attention.. (and coincidentally, an accidental comment bearing out Chris Martin's comment about bands being more creative than solo artists!)

"...It was actually Mozzer's idea to have the photo' taken there. Northern ,working class imagery that he is so famous for... My drum-tech' in The Smiths (Mr Mark "Rooster Cosby") played percussion alongside myself with Julian Cope. He went on to play with Copey as the drummer once I had bogged off. I have my discs in the basement. My favourite? The first album, "The Smiths". Hi Alison, I do see Johnny Marr occasionally, at a combinded speed of about 60 mph. Our children have to get to school somehow! .. Hi Celibate, "I Want a Boy" was played by The Smiths in the very early days, 1982. I don't have a recording of that, but I have a 1982 rehearsal tape of "What Do You See In Him?" Which eventually became, "Wonderful Woman". I also have about 100 tapes of assorted stuff including: Out- takes, instrumentals and unreleased material that I am thinking of taking to WEA. "Never had no one ever", with trumpet would you believe! Dale was playing bass with Johnny and Morrissey when I turned up at Spirit studio's in Manchester. he played the Ritz gig also. I played with Aziz in Denmark last year and I am playing with a guy called "Jason Specter" at the moment. Hi Bear, It was Morrissey's idea to have the photo' taken there and it was used on the sleeve of an album. Although we weren't "Salford" lads as such, we were working class "Lads" in our own club, "The Smiths". Hi Vic, Personally I think the Mac/computer route is great for getting ideas down quickly and as a reference point. Give the other band members a shot with their idea's. That's the beauty of being in a "band" isn't it? Sometimes the best idea's are not always your own. Then when it flops, you can blame everybody else! Just kidding... Good luck with it anyway... Hi Deano, No, I don't keep in touch with Johnny, and no, there is nothing that I know of that I recorded with Moz That's not been released... Hi Steve, I don't think there is much chance of a re-union. It seems relationships have broken down somewhat. I also think ALL of The Smiths have had pretty interesting careers since the demise of the band.. Love & Peace, Mike.."

  • I think Mike is a great drummer, and he takes a lot of unfair critisism from some moz fans. Mike has a lot of better things to say abou the smiths than morrissey.

Throw your NME copy onto the fire, come out and find the one you love!!!

I can't see how WEA could be accepting material from someone who didn't compose it for sure.
and since all the money would go directly to Morrissey and Marr wallets, I can't see either how this "person" is interested in sending them those demos.
luckily, I suppose that he won't be able to do it without Moz and Johnny consent.

  • Hey, i got a mention on one of the best website's in the world. Yeah, Mike's probably the most accessible ex member, and good job to him for it. I seen him play at Aziz at the Witchwood in Ashton, Mancs, and he still has the skill he displayed with The Smiths, if not more! Andy was playing too! I want tickets to the brit awards NOW!!!

        yeah, and what's your point?

Ive asked him several questions, and he answered
        them all,last year.
So I agree that he's very down to earth and he
        seems like an nice man.
On the other hand...Morrissey is my Saint, and
I think I know why Morrissey was so dissapointed
        and angry when Mike went to court;
My guess is that Morrissey feels that the Smiths
was his baby , his family...and sueing your family
        is not done.

I know it was contract and stuff, and Mike
had good reasons to get what he deserved,
but my point is, that it wasn't the money , why
Morrissey kept on fighting against it.

Last line...I can understand both sides.

  • I submitted many questions to Mike (I'm Vic by the way) and he's provided me with suggestions on recording techniques, etc. He's a damn nice guy and please remember that he's a Smith. Moz commented at one point that Andy & Mike were like lawnmower parts...replaceable. That pissed me off to no end. Moz would not be where he is today without them.

On another note....Boz and Johnny also answer almost all their emails. About 2 years ago, I exchanged several e-mails with Boz about Rockabily, recording, etc.

Morrissey..........learn something from these guys already. Thanks for the replies you provided during the last online chat, but you've got a legion of fans who wouldn't mind hearing from you once in a while.

  • I've just been looking at the comment ratings on here and I think whoever is doing these ratings is either out to lunch or on Joyce's payroll.
You rate Celibate Cry's obvious, though pointless, comment a 2 for insightful. Where's the insight there? I think you need to look the word "insightful" up in the dictionary.

Secondly, you rated Panic Girl's comment a 0 calling her a troll when her revised edition of a song which was not only hilarious but was completely accurate and quite perceptive.
And you people astound me in calling Panic Girl a troll for just expressing her beliefs, especially when they were expressed so creatively.

At least Panic Girl has opinions on the things that go on with and around Morrissey, instead of the majority of the posts on this board that about sheer rubbish and look like they were written by uneducated illegal aliens.

  • Mike who do you think you are coming up with your own website; Nobody cares about you; nobody wants to know how you're doing or what you're doing or even if you're living anymore.
Any little interest anyone ever had about you died the day the Smiths broke up.
I looked at your web site and those so called letters to you, which were most likely written by you to make it seem like someone somewhere actually cares at all.
You tell us you are working on a book; don't you see no one will read it; you might as well sell a book with no words in it since no one will open it; and a blank book could be titled "Mike Joyce: All I've Done Since I Left The Smiths" It sure sounds good to me and since you never will do anything you never have to worry about the blank book being out of date.
Then you can write more letters to the publishers and to your site raving about the book.
So Mike, I really don't care what your fake letters say; you can claim you have a lot of hits on your site even though no one goes there but you (luckily you and Andy have nothing else to do anyway); by the way are you helping Andy since I'm sure he's gone through all his ill-gotten money by now.
So do us a favor and close down the site, forget about the book; burn your drums; stop writing letters to yourself, and just go far away; no one will miss you at all.
