Former Madness manager dies - Music Week

Excerpt:

10:56 | Tuesday March 23, 2010

Matthew Sztumpf, a former manager of Madness, The Smiths and Swing Out Sister has died.

Sztumpf is perhaps best known as the manager of Madness but also took charge of the Smiths for two brief stints, helping the group to re-negotiate their contract with Rough Trade.

He also worked extensively within the live industry: he was director of tours, sponsorship and events at Sony Music Europe and also booked the famed Two Tone tour of the late Seventies. More recently he was tour manager for Scouting for Girls.

Sztumpf collapsed from a brain aneurysm a week ago and passed away last Sunday.

    never heard of his name

management was at the end one of the reasons things went blown up, and Johny fed up with it

        they had lots

but Morrissey was in the Smithsday a real controlfreak, he had to know, or was aware of every disciscion, even the food at a 'certain' time

Well, yes, I agree with your comments here. But, hey, Matthew just died from a brain aneurysm! Do you not think an RIP might be appropriate. He was a good man and had to deal with Morrisssey not appearing on Wogan, which was a big deal at the time. Plus, he worked for the Smiths without a contract in order to help them make it work. As he said to Rogan in 'The Severed Alliance': " My mistake was not saying, 'I won't lift a finger until contracts are signed between us' but that's not the way I work. The injunction had to be worked out immediately. I wasn't there long enough for royalties to be commissioned, so I just billed them for my services. I'd fulfilled my purposes, but they paid me, , and I enjoyed it while it lasted." According to Rogan, he seemed one of the good guys, so rest in peace, Matthew.
