  • If you're not aware I'm from the North of England, and if you're also not aware we're turning into a region full of fascists.

    The BNP (British National Party) - Which despite the BNP being it's own organization offers both elected candidates from the National Front - have won a seat in The North. The reactions are fairly mixed, whilst some are hurling street parties and others are protesting, there's still no other way to describe this;
The North of England is now a place divided. Some may want to smash the faces of Polish workers whilst other may want to invite them in for a cuppa.

This is a huge deal, and quite frankly every Northerner ought to be weary of what's to come.
I see mass riots occurring with the same brutality as what was once demonstrated at Strangeways, I can smell the fear of Pakistani and Indian shop-owners as they begin to close their shutters at night.
All in all I can see 'This Is England' but the contradiction of quotes from the Specials.

    Bengali In Platforms
    Alastin Cousin
    National Front Disco

Either way, we've got to stop this before we're cloned with underlip mustaches, and made to speak no other language.

There's a difference between racism and immigration laws, this can be sorted out without having to resort to Nick Griffin.

  • Ok, BNP got a few seats but is it such a big deal? All politics is a propagandist game, no party is innocent. Left or right. If people in the North-West of England chose to vote BNP then that's their view. There's nothing you can do about it now - BNP are through.

It really depends on where you live in the UK. I doubt BNP got many votes in London. In theory it's the same thing as it was with Obama US election: Many parts of the US totally opposed to Obama. Yet he became the President of US.

That's politics for you. It's all propaganda. Politicians have the easiest job in the world: Absolutely no personal responsibility or accountability, all expenses paid. It is a secret society of the priviledged few. AND please don't tell me that some of them are highly educated & highly intelligent people!

You can be highly educated & intelligent but your morals are still rotten.

I've got absolutely no faith in any politician. They are in it for the money.

  • Since we're throwing the word "fascist" around like a bunch of hyper-emotional University students, Europe has always had a soft spot in its heart for fascism of all persuasions: left, or right. It's a part of European culture.

So, the fact that some wacko organizations has gained a bit of political power is not the least bit surprising considering how easily led most Europeans/British are when it comes to politics.

Although, it is comical to see Europeans experiencing the very opposite effect that the economy has had on the masses, while the most naive Americans believe that their country is hurdling toward some permanent far left ideal. What neither of them understand is that in a Democracy, the public gets what the public wants, and what the public wants tends to change frequently.

Politics is merely a football game, and the vast majority of you are guilty for cheerleading for bad ideas on both sides. You perpetuate a lack of skepticism, and an insistence on doing things "your way" without possessing even a fraction of the knowledge, and/or experience necessary to come to such conclusions. In short, you're just like almost everyone else who has come and gone throughout history.

As Europe continues to solidify itself as a true Orwellian region, it's difficult to have much sympathy for any bizarre form of governance that the people there pace their faith in.

Again, the left wing groups that are the favorites of the ill informed possess just as much potential for instituting "fascism" as these odd ball parties that gain some sympathy every now and then. How do we know this? Well, because they have been doing so for quite sometime.

Europe is a weaker defender of free speech, and throughout both the European Continent and Great Britain, civilian monitoring is becoming the norm. You might want to aim your criticism toward those values as well, if you're so incredibly outraged by the topic in general.

It's rather simple: Place less faith in governments of any sort, and this never-ending passion play might become less of a problem in human societies.

    Boo-Hoo.

      • Well, you can start by restoring some meaning to the word "fascism" by not throwing it around for shock value. It's an initial step that can get people to actually care about what your subject matter is, other than assuming that your another know-nothing hand-wringer who thinks the sky is falling whenever someone challenges your world view.

When you profess the opposite extreme, like many European governments, and parties do, then you risk allowing polar opposite views to come into fashion, or at least be entertained when a political part inevitably fails to please everyone.

Does the name Hitler ring a bell? While the analogy isn't perfect, it does relate to the idea that when people are made to feel disempowered, unleashing frustration through scapegoating can lead to some truly unbelievable acts.

This is something that the Bush administration did not show enough attention to when deciding to "liberate" people who live in drastically different cultures. History is full of similar examples. Human beings certainly appreciate history, but we don't learn much from it.

Certainly, the rise of the BNP is a strange development, and quite embarrassing. It reinforces the idea that American politics is incredibly stable by comparison. However, something tells me that somewhere right now, Morrissey is smiling just a bit.

Protecting the rights of idiots is just as important as protecting the rights of well balanced commentators. Americans understand this, yet Europeans seem to take a different strategy. They want to squelch the meanies outright, which only creates deeper rifts. Even Morrissey has been quoted as endorsing this concept. However, he was essentially forced into exiled for doing so.

As for "big words," you should know that I'm morally opposed to them.

        • The rise of the BNP is certainly embarrassing, but far from strange. If anything, it's utterly expected and it's been a fact of British life for decades.

British schools are piss-poor when it comes to educating their pupils about politics. We all leave school and within a couple of years we can vote but other than those who opt for politics as a subject, there is no effort made to explain to people precisely what this vote means, how important it is, and how it might be used. It's like being given a car, a driving license but no driving lessons. It's almost as if there's a fear of introducing politics as a compulsory subject, a dread of accusations of conditioning and indoctrination. Instead, we concentrate on 'the three Rs' and we can't even get that right.

Most people's political views are absorbed from their parents, or are a reaction against their parents. It tends to be parents who have strong political views who are more likely to pass those views on to their children. Naturally, extreme views abound, both left and right.

The last few weeks has seen the politically uneducated preyed upon by politicians of all persuasions, with those desperately craving government deliberately muddying the waters to sow maximum discord: recession, expenses scandals, front bench resignations all stirred together to create a mounting sense of chaos that bears little resemblance to reality. In fact, I haven't seen the public so flagrantly manipulated by a pottage of information since Bush threw 9/11, Weapons of Mass Destruction and Iraq into the blender.

In terms of education, America isn't much better, but at least there's a sense of the importance of democracy. Political extremes exist, of course, as does political apathy, but there's still an underlying joy in simply living in a democracy and having the freedom to vote.

I still cringe when I witness the 'God Bless America' mentality, but not as much as I cringe when I overhear what passes for political discourse in the UK.

  • Don't forget it was the British people who voted for BNP. It was their choice. So they must be doing something right. David Cameron should go back to being a choir boy. All recognised political parties should have the same freedom of speech, so give BNP theirs. It's the only way people can make their own informed decisions about politics.

Politics should be about being able to weigh up pros & cons and becoming informed, not about being force-fed by the mass media.
