Morrissey to Make TV Appearances on Late Late Show -

The Moz doesn't show up on television very often, but when he does it's worth throwing a party over. You know, like what lame people do for episodes of American Idol. Bust out the chips and dip April 28 and 29 when Morrissey appears on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. That's right, that's two performances, so prepare extra guac. Morrissey Announces Exclusive Back-to-Back Performances on
The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in Support of “Greatest Hits”

“ Morrissey isn’t just any singer: he has become one of the defining rock stars of the past few decades by virtue of his grand voice, his grander songs, and his charming habit of playing with melodrama” –New York Times, July 25, 2007

“ Most pop stars have to be dead before they reach the iconic status that Morrissey has achieved in his lifetime.” –The Independent, February 18, 2008

Morrissey will appear on “THE LATE LATE SHOW with CRAIG FERGUSON” on two consecutive nights, Monday April 28th and Tuesday the 29th. This television event is in celebration of the release of “Greatest Hits”, released on Decca/Universal. This will be a rare chance to see Morrissey perform both a new song and a classic single (All You Need Is Me + Irish Blood, English Heart). “THE LATE LATE SHOW with CRAIG FERGUSON” airs weeknights on CBS at 12:35 AM ET/PT.

“Greatest Hits” spans Morrissey’s stellar 20-year solo career as a true original, and one of the world’s greatest musical talents. Every song on “Greatest Hits” is a UK Top 20 single. Nine of these are UK Top 10 hits. Two new songs are included – the new single “That’s How People Grow Up” and “All You Need Is Me” - recorded with Jerry Finn, producer of 2004’s widely acclaimed Billboard Top 20 album “You Are The Quarry”. Morrissey is currently working with Finn on his new studio album, the follow-up to 2006’s UK #1/Billboard Top 20 album “Ringleader Of The Tormentors”. Morrissey will tour Europe this year and a new studio album is due out in the fall.

THE Moz seems to be on TV at least 12 times a year, as long as he's on either side of a new album/release/tour

really, i doubt i'll bother watching Ferguson
tonite. if it was Conan, maybe, but i'm a little tired of wading though awful shows to hear a song he just played the last 3 times he was on TV

  • ..but it's really time for either the long called for Smiths reunion, or for Moz to retire (semi)gracefully and finish that autobiography he's reportedly working on.

Tonight's performance was so lackluster, and the song so boring and tuneless, I was almost embarrassed to watch it in front of my family.

The songwriting is crap, the lyrics are forgettable, and it must be admitted that Moz's time has passed.

That's not to say Moz is all washed-up. His autobiography may well be excellent, and perhaps a new career as a writer or music journalist or some such thing can be forged.

I think the only thing working against him is the fact that it was the Craig Ferguson show. Other than that, I haven't seen him perform this good since "Alma Matter" on Letterman. I hope this is a preview of the rough energy behind the new album. For any Morrissey fan who still claims to be bored after this.... I hope you see the light, HAIL JESUS!!! VIVA MOZ!!!

  • - the logo written on the T-shirt - that was quite hilarious, haha :)
    - the "subtle" modifications made on the lyrics ("you run away, horrified" or something similar)

And so, it is not the dark, deep, Gothic Morrissey that we know from other songs (like Life Is A Pigsty). It is Morrissey being very tongue-in-cheek, and about an ancient theme that used to cause him great suffering in the past: non-requited love, or a love that pretends to be non-requited.

He could be humorous about the issue in the past; but I feel it was more occasionally than now.

Some people don't think he has a good band now; but I like their bold, harder style.

  • Unfortunately missed the live taping, but watching last night and again on the link tonight (Thanks!) and comparing past detailed reports of what transpired around the handling of it as well as comparing with the Carson Daly taping, which I did make it to...

I think the tiny stage at NBC (for Carson) worked better to focus Moz's energy toward the audience, plus it was all us fans, so it definitely felt intimate, especially in the middle of the Palladium residency (Live Nation is starting to strip the venue, eek!!). The lights and camera angles were better (dynamic throughout), too, at NBC imho. Not only did CBS only have just a plain white wash (lights) throughout (boring!), the camera people at CBS obviously got really lazy towards the middle through the end. It becomes just a forward shot of Moz wandering unfocused on the stage. The cameras weren't playing to him, with him or off of him hardly at all. At NBC, they were going crazy! I know the performance probably felt different live, but I don't think CBS did as well of a job as they could have to make good television with such a special guest (and countryman to Ferguson) as Moz and his boyz (ok, I know Scots and English are different, I just mean in terms of the UK, not meaning to offend anyone!).

The shenanigans with tricking fans away and the last-minute wardrobe cover perhaps also contributed to the performance seeming off-center a bit (again imho). If Moz's crew had time to plan, sharp blue suits to contrast the brown columns on the set would have been nice, but perhaps the original color scheme might've been for Moz to stand out in his fab black American Idol shirt (to the chagrin of CBS staff, it seems). Sounded from the reports before that the wardrobe coordinator must've had a hell of a time that day. I could understand Moz's resistance in wearing the jacket due to messing up an intended contrast (just a guess) as well as cheeky joke. Ah well, gotta work with it, and they all did.

The point to Julia, Mel and whoever else house right/stage left duely noted. Much of the performance he seems to face that way and when he sang directly downstage (in front) he didn't seem to be connecting as much, so I'm gueesing more tourists were there.

And perhaps it was just my old-school CRT tube tv and rabbit ears, but the sound of the broadcast was not as good as the NBC broadcast (so far just That's How People Grow Up aired).

So overall, nice to see a Moz appearance on TV to warm us up for the All You Need Is Me (AYNIM) release. CBS didn't do him justice, imo, but sounds like it was a fun time for those who made it. I hope perhaps the Carson Daly show will release their taping of AYNIM soon. The difference will be apparent.

And lucky that the Ewan MacGregor segment was a separate taping. I can't imagine a lengthy conversation about haggis while Moz watching in the green room would have boded well.

Well, that's my two-cents thrown into the pond!

  • -HE IS ALMOST FIFTY YEARS OLD. His scope and living conditions and experiences have changed. He is not writing weaker lyrics, he is just writing lyrics that speak to him about his life NOW. I don't get all you people who say he's "lost it" or that the new songs don't hold up, or whatever. I mean...he puts out a couple sub-par (for him) songs and you think he's WASHED UP??? Have you not heard Mama Lay Softly On the Riverbed? Don't lose faith so easily.

-THE SMITHS ARE DEAD AND GONE, AND WILL STAY THAT WAY. Yes, they were the greatest band ever. But do you really think that if Morrissey and Marr got back together, it would just be peachy? What has Marr done since The Smiths that implies he can still write music like he did a quarter century ago? Nothing memorable. (still a cool guy tho.) Anyway...Morrissey, in the meantime, has put out great album after great album.

I agree that "All You Need Is Me" is not his most, umm, shining moment. But it's still a solid song. I mean, c'mon, listen to the new REM album if you really want to talk about a once-great genius who has completely lost relevance and inspiration.

Because it ain't our Mozzer. (tons of b-sides and rarities to stream)

IBEH *kicked ass!* Total 180 degree difference from my last posted opinions for AYNIM. Drab brown jackets off, Morrissey sportin' the frink under the grey jacket, Jesse absolutely shrrrrreddding on guitar with the band (hey, Matt Walker looks good with hair! How's about some more fuzz, Solomon? Boz rebelliously wearing a rockin' black shirt instead of everyone else's grey! ;). The cameras getting wild enough to make it good tv, Moz connecting at all angles and very directed and passionate.

Pretty wonderful! Especially to share it on the Ferguson show. Too bad there was no interview. I'll always be left wanting, I suppose! Interesting that Mozzer stuck to "Labour and Tories."

Of course, the Morrissey fundamentalists would champion an album solely comprised of his bowl movements. There simply is no standard with them. Morrissey existing is the highlight of their evening.
