Morrissey and the band performed / recorded four live tracks last night for the 'Later...with Jools Holland' show to be broadcast in the UK on BBC2, Friday 8th February, at 11.35pm.

The four songs are:

That's How People Grow Up
Somethings Been Squashing My Skull

  • Will all 4 songs be shown? Don't they usually give people 2 with the 'main' act being given 3?

  • Yes, Morrissey's voice was on top form and he seemed to enjoy the adoration he received left-stage. I'll be applying for the job of powdering his forehead. This had to be done several times, what with the hot lights 'n' all. The sound was brilliant, we had an excellent view, and it was a very special evening. He did a lot of eyebrow-raising and tongue in cheek when it came to sitting through the other acts. Bit of banter with Jools about ageing, tho' this won't have been filmed. And yes, he sang "Something is Squeezing (rather than squashing) My Skull".

  • I really like "Something is Squeezing my Skull".

I think it's his most energetic & fun song in quite a while. It's also one of his best examples of a scrambled/drugged mind lyrically...

It is actually VERY Ramones-y in theme, and nearly in music. It's strange that the older he gets, the louder and heavier his music gets. Whenever he sings almost anything at all to an Acoustic guitar these days, people think it's the best thing he's ever done. (How few recent acoustics there are when you think about it!)

I agree with many that softer music is better suited to his voice/themes, but the occasional rocker like this gets me pumped up....

  • "Something's Been Squashing My Skull" is easily Morrissey's worst song title of his career, and might rank in the history of popular music as one of the worst song titles of all time.

It just keeps getting worse, and his naive fans just keeping swallowing it whole like starving dogs.

We have two exclusive live versions available. You can buy Live at The Hollywood Bowl here and Live at The Roundhouse here.

  • For a man who takes such a fastidious interest in his wardrobe and demeanour, the grey trousers he wore on the show tonight have got to be the most ill-fitting garment I have ever seen on a man. The crotch of said trousers is almost at knee level - the tailor who made them obviously trained as an air-con ventilation engineer, by giving his client's balls plenty of room to breath and manoeuvre.

Mr. M looks like a dishevelled drunk on the back streets of Glasgow, getting rightly pissed on a Friday night. He, at one point, was wearing his tie front to back. Not a good look! His head is so far up his own arse, he can't even get the details right of his clothing.

And the SPITTING! I didn't know he spitted so copiously when he sings. Jools Holland nearly had to erect his rainy-day umbrella to keep himself dry.

Mr. Morrissey was out-performed and out-classed before his second performance, by an unknown band called Ida Maria who were quite breath taking in their performance and charisma. Lead singer has all the elements of other chanteuses a la Siouxsie, Debbie Harry and Sandie Shaw, whilst fronting a fully vocal male band. Brilliantly entertaining!!!

On the other Mr. Morrissey with his pub rock schlock, his spitting, ill-fitting trousers and his tiresome sch-tick of whipping the floor with the mic lead is just middle aged crashing bore.

The song writing is just the same old dirge from the past ten years. I don't believe he's actually wrote a decent song since he recorded 'Malajusted' and all his recent song titles all sound the SAME, the SAME.

Boring, monotonous rubbish. Hasn't anyone else on here noticed? Or are you all deluded into thinking that he's not at his 'prime'.

I think he should seriously consider retiring.

  • is so gracious she actively assisted Mr. Morrissey in his rendition of the 'The Last of The Famous International Playboys'; a song he can no longer sing without the aid of a backing tape.

Did anyone else notice his lips stop as the 'voice' continued during one segment? To get it wrong when you're singing live is one thing; but to get it completely wrong when you have a backing tape to back you up is truely appalling.

This was a dreadful performance. If he can no longer sing that particular song he should drop it from his live repertoire entirely. Otherwise he is going to be perceived by younger audiences and peers as a has-been who can no longer hack it. He takes his devoted audience/fans for granted and thinks he can drift into sloppiness whenever it suits, knowing they'll always have him back.

By his own standards, not even mine, he let himself down on the Jool Holland show tonight!

  • Good performance by Morrissey on the show. He struggled with some high notes on the 2nd track he performed. But I have to say , haven't not seen him play live this year - I hadn't heard the newer tracks at all - and I like what I hear. Hopefully the new studio album will be better than the last.
