We’ve since learned it was used to push both Japanese cars and Canadian beer. We regret the error, and we are sure Morrissey does too.

Because they re-recorded it, they did not have to ask Morrissey or Marr's permission, they just had to pay the royalties - which may have only been paid to Marr considering Morrissey's lyrics were not used.

That doesn't mean that someone else able to authorize its use wasn't asked and obliged. He is most likely aware that it was used but he is not taking responsibility for their actions.
