LA Weekly Clarification

In last week’s cover story [“Moz the Cat,” Feb. 2–8], Morrissey denied that the Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now” had been used to sell cars. We’ve since learned it was used to push both Japanese cars and Canadian beer. We regret the error, and we are sure Morrissey does too.

  • ...maybe this is the first time he's heard about it? I guess it's possible he did though.

  • Canadian Beer (Score:1, Interesting)

Yes, HSIN was used in a Canadian beer comercial (Labatt Ice Beer) in the early 90's. It ran on tv and radio for about a year, however it was not The Smiths version, it was an instumental studio re-recording.

Because they re-recorded it, they did not have to ask Morrissey or Marr's permission, they just had to pay the royalties - which may have only been paid to Marr considering Morrissey's lyrics were not used.

  • I remember the ad well: slowed film footage of a nissan vehicle skidding on a wet surface as the screeching guitars of HSIN accompany the visual.
Selling out if there ever was one, indeed.

  • There are few things in history that I remember where I was and what I was doing when they happened. The 9/11 attacks (I was returning home from the gym before work in Lower Manhattan) and the use of the opening riff from HSIN to sell cars are but the few things. It was early evening, It was the spring of 2000, I was at work, heard the licks and looked up to see a car sliding on a wet-slick road. I screamed (well, I spoke loudly). What? Why? How?

  • we know HSIN wasn't used to advertise cars. the song was used to sell a metallic box popelled by a combustible engine with 4 rotating things that were invented by cavemen.

  • The specific question regarding HSIN asks if anyone ASKED him to use the song for advertising.

That doesn't mean that someone else able to authorize its use wasn't asked and obliged. He is most likely aware that it was used but he is not taking responsibility for their actions.
