11.01.05: WHEN IN ROME, PRODUCE A MORRISSEY ALBUM

Kes also writes:
I found a semi-diary of the new Morrissey album on Tony Visconti's website, some cool pictures too....oh and i quote Tony Visconti>

"Monday until the present: We have been working on the music and each day it just sounds better and better. I find every musician in the band a joy to work with. Morrissey's vocals are passionate and confident. Right now I'm at the mixing stage and most of the musicians have gone home. I am two thirds of the way through one of the best albums I've ever worked on, with not only Morrissey at his best, but the plot has twists and turns which somehow involve film composer Ennio Morricone and an Italian children's choir. That should whet your appetite, you Moz fans, you!"

This is great news and bodes well for the new album.
If Mike Joyce got involved, Morricone could do a new version of his score for the classic "For A Few Dollars More". Somehow "For A Few Pounds More" dosen't have quite the same ring :)

  • Since when did Morrissey start wearing glasses? {Just kidding} Here we have the greatest songwriter/vocalist along side one of the greatest producers in the world also. How could this new album be anything else but G-R-E-A-T? "The waiting is the hardest part". Morrissey is definately aging gracefully as well as Tony also. They would make a nice couple would they not? Oh, to be a fly on the wall inside the studio during the remastering stage. Thats all I need is one badly burned pirate copy of the new album. • There's a sense of continuity with the heart of the old writing team there, but with Visconti, Tobias as a main songwriter, and keyboards again, there's also the possibility of something exciting and new.

I think Visconti was a great choice - my main concerns are: having 3 guitarists, none of whom are virtuosos as far as I know. How will that work? And also, Mikey Farrell, whose keyboard parts on No One Can Hold a Candle were little short of appalling.

If Farrell is more accomplished than he seems.. which I hope he is, and the guitarists figure out a way to work together, it should be exciting.

I'd like real strings - rather than the deliberately camp fake strings on Quarry, and to offset the tender, languid moments Morrissey tells us abound on this album, perhaps a few "Daddy's Voice" style glam tunes. Morrissey does that sleazy thing so well; So much better than anyone else around at the moment.

There is a better world. Well, there must be.
  • If someone had asked me 6 months ago who I would personally love to see Morrissey work with in the future it would be this amazing combination of Morrissey (*World's Greatest Living Singer/Artist/Performer), Visconti (*World's Greatest Producer) and Morricone (*World's Greatest Composer/Conductor). This is without the shadow of a doubt a @#$%!!ing amazing Dream Team...

So - all wingers begone NOW!!! There is nothing, repeat nothing, worthy of complaint on Moz-solo from this moment on. It doesn't, nay could'nt, nay won't, ever get better than this!!!

Visconti is unquestionably a well-earned living legend in production circles. And now, to top that great coup off, we also get "The Maestro" himself, doing REAL strings? Are you kidding???

Remember all those Moz-solo gripes about fake strings on YATQ? Well, our prayers have been answered not only with real strings, but by having them added by one of the greatest living composers/conductors still working today: Morricone. We are truly spoiled. What next? Harriet Wheeler comes out of retirement to provide backing vocals? Morrissey duets with Siouxsie..?...hang on a minute...

Here's an optimistic, but now somehow more realistic call: I hereby predict this will be Morrissey's greatest musical moment since TQID. Maybe even greater I say in hushed tones.

Can't wait to see the anticipation this generates once it hits the mainstream music media...Roll on February!

Oh, and a full Australian tour thanks, while our prayers are being so readily answered...

It confirms what I've often felt about this site. A lot of you are more concerned with Morrissey's public image and credibility than you are with the actual music.

So you are wetting yourself because he's working with Visconti and Morricone. That will go down well with the critics won't it? Who cares what the music is like.

s long as Boz and Alain stay in the background, the "credible" critics don't like those two so they should keep out of the way.

(one week ago.) Within the span of one week, he flies to Rome (where the music's already recorded?), and is already 2/3 of the way finished with mixing the album. • Given Visconti's pedigree as a producer (especially his work with David Bowie) this could well be Morrissey's finest solo effort to date.
From his (Visconti's) comments, it does give the impression that Morrissey is stretching himself a little more creatively on this production - and whilst I doubt it'll be as radical a departure as, say, Bowie's 'Low' LP was, it still might end up being Morrissey's most challenging work yet.
I honestly have a good feeling about this album - in Visconti, Morrissey might well have found a kindred spirit to unlock his more adventurous side.
    Let's hope so.
