The Winner Of The Xfm Greatest Indie Band Vote!

Excerpt:

Thousands of you voted (and nearly as many e-mailed us complaining that your favourite bandmember wasn't represented) and now we can reveal the winner of the Xfm World’s Greatest Ever Indie Supergroup Vote...

But we have reason to believe that certain Muse messageboards had been encouraging people to fiddle with their computers so they could multiple vote. Thus things may have been a little Muse-heavy. So disregarding their votes, the band would be formed of Thom Yorke on vocals, Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead on guitar Oasis' Andy Bell on bass and Dave Grohl on drums. Which sounds a little more interesting...

Best Singer:

  1. Matt Bellamy (Muse)
  2. Thom Yorke (Radiohead)
  3. Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
  4. James Dean Bradfield (Manics)
  5. Morrissey (The Smiths)
  6. Jeff Buckley
  7. Brett Anderson (Suede / The Tears)
  8. Chris Martin (Coldplay)
  9. Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
  10. Damon Albarn (Blur)
  11. Frank Black (Pixes)
  12. Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)
  13. Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
  14. Michael Stipe (R.E.M)
  15. Johnny Borrel (Razorlight)
  16. Shirley Manson (Garbage)
  17. Pete Doherty (Babyshambles)
  18. Kelly Jones (Sterephonics)
  19. Polly Harvey (PJ Harvey)
  20.  Courtney Love (Hole)

Best Guitarist:

  1. Matt Bellamy (Muse)
  2. Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
  3. Noel Gallagher (Oasis)
  4. Johnny Marr (The Smiths)
  5. Bernard Butler (Suede / The Tears)
  6. John Squire (The Stone Roses)
  7. Graham Coxon (Blur)
  8. Jack White (White Stripes)
  9. Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)
  10. Johnny Buckland (Coldplay)

  • It seemed people just voted for the vocalist and guitarist of their fave band (as you would do) so the lists are almost parallel at the top. Except for the guitarist for the Manics must suck as he doesn't make it and throws the whole thing off by one. Did they really think XFM listeners were going to be such descerning listeners that they would pick the guitarist from one band and the vocalist for the other? Surely not even they are that thick? And if Noel Gallafuck is a better guitarist then Johnny Marr, I will eat his eyebrows.

Johnny Marr falls below Noel Gallagher????

I'm surprised Britney Spears hasn't made this magnificent list!

  • Matt Bellamy best singer? Please! He sounds like he is having an asthma attack, listen for it and you'll notice there is a big gasp at the end of every line he sings.. muse aren't all together a bad band, but once you notice this it just ruins it cos you just notice it every single time .. he hasn't really got that much control over his voice and his lungs really don't sound like they were built for singing.

  • there's no way he, or anyone in that list, has a better voice than Jeff Buckley. That man could out-sing a Siren (and I mean the characters from Greek mythology, for those of you picturing the emergency services).
Having said that, it'd be interesting to hear Morrissey cover Hallelujah.

They´re such a fantastic band. All of their three albums are absolutely stunning, it seems to me they´re the next step in musical evolution. And their gigs consist of pure energy.

I´m a huge Moz fan and he´s my favourite forever, but Muse deserve much more attention than they get. In the german issue of the Rolling Stone, there was a poll about the best 500 rock songs of all time, and no Muse song in it which was quite surprising in a negative way (btw, 4 Smiths and 1 Moz song in it...).

I could understand myself not knowing 13 or 15, but when I haven't even heard of the "No.1" singer, it seems to me that this poll might be just a little bit biased.

    A moratorium on polls, please.

Liam G is a empty headed numpty who sings some of the worst and meaningless lyrics ever. His brother is a clot whose guitar skills compromise of running up and down the scales.

Come on kids don"t choose style over content.

By the way where is John Lydon who has to be the greatest front man ever.

Muse....aping Queen come on the youth sort it out.

  • i think these 'best ever' polls just reveal nostalgia, a sense that the best is past. which in the case of 'indie rock', it is. can anyone honestly say that any band has added to what the smiths and the pixies created?

good to see moz and marr in the xfm consciousness, among people (stipe excepted) who hadn't started when the smiths split. the smiths stand miles above any of the others who are (bar the odd decent song) just safe reading festival major-label 'indie' idiot fodder. for real comparison you have to put moz up against lou reed, the beatles, noel coward etc

i note the absence of shaun ryder, a true original. but the mondays were a bit 'dance' weren't they? yikes , they actually threatened to move things on. of course they were even slightly 'black' and that won't do...

luckily dance is now officially dead in britain and we've gone back to funk-free 4-4 downstroke indie plodding (to accompany the home-improvement shows). could someone please bomb xfm (and nme)? only metaphorically of course. with its figureheads decapitated we can rid ourselves of this poison and give music back its future - which is out there if you look beyond xfm

  • #1 for singer shouldve been Moz.

#1 for guitar shouldve been Jack White.

Muse apparently has a very dedicated fanbase (who are apparently very big Radiohead fans as well, which only makes sense since Muse hav been trying- to no avail- to record their own 'The Bends' for their entire career).

ihardly think the fact that he is still quite young is any reason to overlook his incredible talents- if anything it should make them all the more incredible as it did for the young Johnny Marr. itrust you wouldnt hav said the same about Marr in 1987 when he was even more inexperienced than White is today. hell, the only reason Marr is on the list is for the music he made back then with The Smiths- nothing since would merit him a position.

And yes, Robert (that's with a 't' now) Smith, is a great songwriter, producer and a damn fine bloke, but there's no way his voice or playing lives up to some of these singers and guitarists on this list.
Still, not a good list though; it's always the same with these things.
