The show airs Friday night at 10:35pm on BBC1.

Mike Duncan writes:

I was at the recording of the Jonathan Ross last night and Morrissey sang IBEH and Everyday is Like Sunday. Morrissey appeared very nervous during the interview and didn't really take to Jonathan Ross' chummy line of questioning. During a break while they set up cameras Ross asked him if he should call him Steven and Morrissey nobody calls him that and the name has bad connotations for him. Everyone calls him Morrissey. Nothing much came out of the interview that wasn't already known, he talked about his autobiography and launched a stinging attack on David Bowie (among others).

  • Bit disappointed in his song choice (Everyday I mean), hope his 3 song set is more imaginative on Jools next week...

I wish Morrissey would be nicer to Bowie and other musicians. Whatever he may think of them, it just comes off as petty and nasty when Morrissey criticizes.

Maybe him and Bowie should just "Get in the Ring"

  • Is this Ross guy some amateur? Why would he ask such a thing?

Who is this Ross for us in the states who know nothing of him?

There was just a bit of the interview on BBC 6 music....I am listening on-line.

Ross asked Morrissey about his autobiography.

Morrissey replied he has a few chapters remaining.
Ross replied..."What does that mean?" Morrissey replied, "It means I have a few chapters remaining to write."

Morrissey seemed right on the mark...was audience laughter. too. Ha HA!

    Rock on Morrissey.

  • Here are some notes I took from the interview:

JR: Does everyone call you Morrissey?
    M: Absolutely everyone

JR: Can I call you Steven?
    M: No

JR: Can I be your friend after the show?
    M: I don’t think so.

JR: It’s a great album I nearly cried when I heard it.
M: Well, why didn’t you cry?
JR: I like to hold something back.
    M: For when?
JR: For when you’ll be my friend.

JR: My middle name is Stephen
    M: But spelled with a P H.
    JR: How did you know?

JR: How many friends have you got
    M: 7

Regarding friends & associates getting to close to him:
M: Then it ends remarkably when they find out what I’m really like.
JR: Could you ever have a meat eater as a friend?
    M: Maybe over the telephone

    On vegetarianism
JR: Would you ever write another song, “Meat is STILL Murder”
    M: Um, no.

M: Would you ever eat your cat?
JR: If I were really fucking hungry.
    M: When would that be?
JR: If a plane crashed and I were left stranded and I needed to eat
M: Yes, but why would you be on a plane with your cat?
    [Audience laughs]

On Moz’s weight gain since he was in the Smiths.
M: I like to fill a door frame.

JR: What sort of swimming trunks to you wear.
    M: Extremely revealing once:

    On friendship:
M: Friendship is a tricky thing.

M: There is no Mozzer charm.

JR: After your guest leave do you ever think, ‘Oh, I wish I’d been a bit nicer.’

    M: Never

M: I don’t perform, ever. I’ve said it before. Only seals perform.

    Regarding Latino fan base:
    M: It’s fascinating

    M: The wife-beaters and tattoos

    Regarding David Bowie:
    M: I think he’d love any audience.

JR: I think you’re being unnecessarily bitchy, you know.

    M: He’s not actually a person. He’s a business. David Showie

  • It was the first time I'd ever been to a TV show, my legs turned to jelly when Moz came out but he seemed very nervous, rubbing his hands alot.
I thought he would have done two new songs but nevermind.
Inbetween filming Ross asked Alain Whyte why the band didn't have a name, Alain replied we couldn't think of one.
I did alot of shouting when the big man came out, so I'll be keeping an ear open for myself tonight.
The Harry Hill moment was funny.

  • I havent seen the performance yet, I'll be watching (and taping) it tonight. But I had a feeling that Morrissey would seem nervous when on the show. I cant recall in the time of The Smiths, him ever doing an interview with an audience present. I know he was on the Jack Docherty show around 1995 but I dont remember him being interviewed.
I remember Morrissey being on Johnathon Ross's show The Saturday Zoo circa 1991/2, and on the Ross hosted Amnesty International concert of early '92, so I assumed that they knew each other. From what I've read from the main article here and some of the comments it appears this is not the case, especially if Johnathon had to ask what how he should address Morrissey. Unless it was all a scam of course. There is always that possibility. I guess we'll have a chance to judge for ourselves when we watch it tonight.

  • Moz looks sooo dashing in red, it looks like the same jacket he wore the last show at the Apollo. Sadly we don't get this show in the States, so thanks to all for the details. On a side note the first time he was on the Craig Kilborn show he was really nervous as well, I wonder if he watches himself on these shows?

  • It was with dread that I read that Morrissey would be interviewed as well as singing on JR because anyone who understands the man will realise that he is going to be extremely nervous. On reflection, though, I think it`s just brilliant to have a role model who is so obviously HUMAN. We tend to forget that when Morrissey sings of his alienation and unutterable ineptitude it is precisely because that is how he feels. That`s what makes him the special performer that he is. IT`S REAL. FIRSTODIE

  • Poor Moz! (Score:1, Insightful)

In a way I do feel for Moz as the J.Ross show is not the kind of environment where he's going to thrive. I get the impression from his MOJO interview that he has done it to fulfil some publicity obligations to Sanctuary. Elvis Costello (also a great talent) is, like Moz, extremely intelligent but much more suited to an interview situation like this, as his own appearance on Ross demonstrates.

But I do wish Moz would get over a few things - like, Bowie, the court case, Joyce, tax, music critics, the racist debate. I know they must have (understandably) hurt him, but he really does come across as stuck in the past to no good effect when talking or singing about these things.
And his bitchiness vis-a-vis Bowie really is now getting rather tiresome. Bowie's own appearance on Ross was not stunted by such unnecessary talk.

  • I'm so glad Dale Winton did the 'warm up' for this show as he was in sparkling form and confessed to having a real crush on Deano.

I'm ignoring Ronnie O'Sullivan - like Moz did in the Green Room.

I'm waiting for the main event!

The four poofs singing acapella Morrissey songs is a real nice touch - and they're wearing T-shirts with his image on the front.

    So far so good.

  • a very positive and entertaining piece of televisual entertainment. The songs were performed superbly.

I still don't like the buttoned up jacket - it looks like a straitjacket!

He looked fairly relaxed, just has that nervous tick of constantly pursing his lips and sticking his tongue in his cheek. Ross went out of his way to make Moz feel at ease, which was really good.

Other songs he shouldn't do live: Suedehead, Interesting Drug and Golden Lights. Maybe a few more songs like Asian Rut should be introduced?
