  • Its an Ok Album i wouldve expected better after 7 years to rethink my career but it is better than maldjusted and southpaw anyways here is the track lsiting and a sentence or two summary .

America is not the world - Not a good opening song but the lyrics are strong
Irish Blood English heart - Great song very rockin, i wish they wouldve done the short guitar solo to end the song when he first played it live
I have forgiven jesus - I like the chorus part but he doesnt really sing in this song its more like hes talking if it wasnt for the chorus this song would suck
Come back to Camden- Nice slow song , nice lyrics, nice music
Im not sorry- One of my favorite songs on this album, this is going to be a favorite i can already tell, great lyrics and sung beautifully
The world is full of crashing bores- sung better live back in 2002 shouldve kept the concept of making it a fast paced song
how can anybody possibly know how i feel- Great song and music only thing that bothers me is the lyric " the only one around here who is me is me " should have been " the onlyone around here who is me is " I " , it just doesnt sound right
First of the gang to die " awsome song but again needs to be sung like at the 2002 tour face paced
let me kiss you - not too fond of this song but i can see its already a fan favorite
All the lazy dykes - needs to be on the B sides and not on the album its garbage
I like you - sung to slow he ruined the good 2002 tour songs sounds better live
You know i couldnt last - great track nice way to end the album

I think its a superb album, not one duff song - I think its easily his most consistently good album. Too early for me to judge whether it reaches the top heights of Viva Hate,Vauxhall And I, but it has no lows.

  • america...is a bad opening song because it doesn't grab the attention. and it seems out of step with the rest of the album due to it's lyrics. and enough good and bad artist have already made songs about post 9-11 america and morrissey is not really adding anything with this song. and come back to camden would sound better with lillywhite/trouble loves me production. now it just sounds vegas. but the flute solo is great. and the person who said this is better that vauxhall needs to think before they say things like that. but the album is still like an answered prayer. it'll get played to death by me. viva moz!!!

  • i hate to spoil it for myself so close to the actual release date, but these tracks are gorgeous...all doubt of Jerry Finn's skills should be erased. although i like the more "raw" sounding live FOTGTD, the studio version is awesome.

i sincerely hope this album does good for Mozzy, he really deserves it.

  • Without reviewing the album on a track by track basis and without putting the album in a historical context (against all his other albums), I like Quarry very much. A few things which stand out to me is the musical diversity ranging from "Camden" which is purposefully passe (in the greatest sense of the word) to "I'm Not Sorry" which some have called Dido-esque, because of its drum loops and "creamy" feeling, to "I Like You" which seems to have a dance-like beat to it. The album lyrically is very direct - both beautiful & blunt at times but it works magnificently. Morrissey's vocal lay down or vocal delivery matches and compliments the album's musical diversity - at times it seems like a tight squeeze, at times it's as if there is an entire open ocean for him to plant his vocals...and I think for the most part he pulls it off very well.

Listening to it on VH1.com, I find myself going all around wanting to hear this song again, no that one, and then this one...I don't think there is a bad song on the album. Last night, I must have listened to "Crashing Bores" 20 times, and even though some have complained that it is too slow as compared to when played live, I think it would make a wonderful 3rd single, the 2nd being "First of the Gang to Die."

It is also encouraging that while the reviews have been almost unanimous in their praise for Quarry, that fans and critics differ greatly in their assessment of which tracks are the best. This in itself bodes very well for it shows that Morrissey was correct in saying this album "has something for everyone."

It is good to see Moz exploring new musical directions, to see him open to other musical avenues. The addition of keyboards has only enriched the songs recorded during the Quarry sessions and can be, perhaps, most noticeably felt on the b-side "The Never-Played Symphonies."

I hope that both purists and newbies will keep an open mind and appreciate what he has created...a great album unlike anything he has spawned before.

  • Like Sonnet29, I , too can't get enough of "How can anybody possibly know how i feel." It is by far the best song on the album. I think many of the songs could have been heavier (not in that heavy metal type of way though)and faster. For instance "crahing bores," as someone already said, should have been performed in the same way as the last tour. I also don't like the back up vocals on "First of the Gang..." I was really hoping that "I Like you" would come across with the same conviction as the last tour, however, i do like some of the vocal changes. I Have forgiven jesus is also great. In spite of my comments I have to say that I really, honestly admire the fact that morrissey is exploring new things. Before I go, if you have not heard the album and are witing for the release date, know this: "You know I couldn't last" will blow your fucking mind away.

  • Firstly I would like to thank whoever put up the VH1 link, Im delighted to get an airing before I buy it on Monday (Dublin release date) but I must admit that I am disappointed, I really am.

I have waited so long and with so much eager anticipation for YATQ. Now I have only listend to the entire album in its entirity once and I sincerely hope that it improves with further listens and believe me there will be many. However my first impression is to say that it is just ok. I love "The World is full of" and IBEH, but "America" and "Jesus" are really lacking any lyrical poignance to be honest. And as Ive read from others there was so much potnetial in those concepts.

Obviously it is better than any other release from any other artist that Ive heard this year but being a fan and having bought every album (with the exception of Maladjusted cos that really was just shit!) I have to say this is an average Moz album. Maybe on a par with Kill Uncle, nowhere near Vauxhall or Your Arsenal and it couldnt even be mentioned in the same breath as any Smiths album.

I really hope that it will improve with time, I want to love this as much as Moz himself but at this stage I must conclude, average songs, average lyrics, average album.

  • It's funny to me that the most vocal critics of Mozzer's new album are the fans that love him the most. Not that this indicates a flaw in either devotion or reasoning, but given the fact we have waited seven long years for a new release it seems rather curious to read the slams about bad vocals, slow songs, lack of a third single, weak lyrics and other such potshots from a website that can't get enough of Morrissey.

IMHO, You are the Quarry is an excellent album. One of his very finest. Strong production for which Jerry Finn should be applauded. Fantastic music provided by the band -- some of their finest to date and from Mozzer we get lyrics that are blunt, caustic, funny, beligerent, and incisive. Mozzer's vocal style is better than ever. His voice drips with emotion, longing, irony and soul. His vocal phrasing and style is as good as anything he has ever done.

All the so called "weak" tracks that have been lambasted here on the board -- well -- I disagree, "America" to me is a gentle swat that makes it's point without coming across as a tirade and the "I love you's" that end the song are so full of emotion they suggest the true contraction in his feelings. The other tracks that have been singled out as weak -- "All the lazy dykes" --'I Like You" -- "Let me Kiss You" -- well again I politely disagee. Any of these songs would be such a welcome addition to a radio stations playlist.

Lastly, many mentions of the fact the new songs are not played the same way they were live, well, I cannot comment because I unfortunately did not have the good fortune of seeing him perform these live but I enjoy the pacing of "Crashing Bores" and "First of the Gang" and though it may not suit your taste, it has always been this way. The Smiths songs live were much faster. Morrissey's solo stuff has always been faster live.

My last comment. It's great to have you back Mozz. The world is full of crashing bores and you are definitely not one. Kudos on an excellent album that showcases various styles and influences. Here's hoping this album gets the recognition it so richly deserves!
    Anonymous -- Thursday May 13 2004, @09:14AM (#102235)
  • I've been listening to the live stream all day, over and over. I think this one of Morrissey's finest hours as a soloist. In my pretend pretend world as a famous music critic, I'd give this album a 8,5/10. 9,5/10 after I rip it to my ipod sans track number 7.

Come Back To Camden, The First of the Gang of to Die & IBEH are outstanding.

I Have Forgiven Jesus is absolutely vintage Morrissey.

*However* it's not a 10 album for me for two main reasons. Firstly I think I'm Not Sorry was purposely engineered to sound like early Smiths. I like the lyrics, I like the melody, I don't like the production. So that's where half a point goes.

He gets a full point docked for the extremely average (consider that a euphemism) "How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel". Not my cup of Thames-tasting tea.

Mind, two songs that I absolutely despised when I first heard them were The Queen is Dead and November Spawned a Monster, both of which went on to become two of my all time favourites. Maybe over time YATQ will become a legitimate 9,5 for me.
    Anonymous -- Thursday May 13 2004, @09:27AM (#102241)
  • OK, I've had YATQ for a good 2 weeks now, as well as the Irish Blood English Heart CD singles. For what it's worth, here's my two cents:

It's Hard To Walk Tall When You're Small (10/10)

This is easily the best song Morrissey has recorded since "Sister I'm a Poet". This song is just sexy, fun, and young. Better than anything on the proper LP. It gives me the warm fuzzies every time I listen, like it's a song I heard on the radio once in 1988 only never to hear it again until now.

    Munich Air Disaster 1958 (10/10)

I like this one nearly as much as IHTWTWYS. Again, there is some weird nostalgic feeling I get with this one. The line about mother nature is one of Moz's best lines ever. Like IHTWTWYS, it's just a very simple, pretty melody that will instantly get stuck in your head. What's almost insulting is how these songs got tacked onto the back of something as dreadful as IBEH.

    The Never Played Symphonies (9/10)

IBEH may just have the best Morrissey B Sides ever. The subtle piano on this is just beautiful, adding a subtle new dimension to the song. What I love most about these B sides is that they are SHORT. All my favorite Smiths/Morrissey songs clock in at or around 3 minutes even.

    I Have Forgiven Jesus (6/10)

I absolutely love the piano on this one! I actually like the Monday-Tuesday section, actually it's one of the funniest bits on the record. I'm only knocking off a few points because the song unfortunately has a very akward chorus. Rhyming Desire with Desire and such. The piano really saves this.

    Come Back To Camden (9/10)

A stunning weeper with great lyrics. Very theatrically gay, in a good way. Melodically pleasing and pretty, and yes, I love the schmaltzy strings and all. Perfect for any rainy day.

How Could Anyone Possibly Know How I Feel? (9.5/10)

The best of the album tracks, and in my opinion an obvious single. Even with the word "shit". This is as close to The Smiths as you're gonna get.

First of the Gang to Die (7/10)

It will be a huge hit. You can almost sing the words to Suedehead right on top of it, but this is still a strong pop song. I have a slight problem with the production on this one, I wish this could've sounded as "tough" as IHTWTWYS or HCAPKHIF. I listened to Suedehead a minute ago and shit... why can't the bass be that thick and meaty anymore? Actually, playing FOTGTD and Suedehead back to back made me a bit sad, because FOTGTD just can't compare. Still, I can't be sad with those wonderful B sides.

    Let Me Kiss You (7/10)

I like the arrangement, and I like the lyrics, chorus is a little stiff.

    All The Lazy Dykes (9/10)

I don't know what's with all the negativity on this one. I think it's one of the better songs on YATQ. Lovely chorus. Why is it so hated? Why?

    I Like You (5/10)

When I heard there were "acid" synths on it I got all excited. They are pushed so far back in the mix that you barely notice them. I love electronic music but maybe it's for the best that Moz steers away from being too techno. That aside, the song is not up to snuff lyrically or melodically. Very average. Not single worthy at all.

    You Know I Couldn't Last (8.5/10)

Paint a Vulgar Picture Part 2. I like how it goes from loud to quiet, not spectacular but a good ender nonetheless.

    The Bad:

    America Is Not The World
    Irish Blood English Heart
    I'm Not Sorry
    Crashing Bores

I don't want to dwell on the negative too much, but America is Not The World may be the absolute worse of the solo work. IBEH is mediocre at best, and comes off like a parody, especially "Foreverrrrrrrr". I'm Not Sorry is a baffling Dido lite train wreck, and a shame too, because there are some interesting lines in it. Crashing Bores... totally ruined by it's pacing. I hope it get's redone as a B side or something.

Overall, YATQ as is... 2.5/5 stars

You have to skip around too much to get to the good tracks, and the sequencing isn't the best.

If you toss in Mexico, the 3 IBEH B sides, FOTGTD, HCAPKHIF, Camden, YKICL, Dykes, and Let Me Kiss You.... you have a much better record. I'm happy to have a few good new Moz songs at any rate though.
