  • Good show in general, not the best though. Santa Barb was better in 02. Disappointed that few knew who Elefant were. Some idiot yelled 'it's the strokes!' I think I was the only one singing along. Moz didnt play too many new songs, Boz Boorer is getting fatter every day, Dino looked like someone out of blink 182. Gary Day looks the same. Alain looks generally the same, and the new guy Mikey....
Ended with I know its gonna happen some day, IBEH as encore. Finally got to hear Jobriath. See you at kilborn MORRISSEY!

    18. Irish Blood, English Heart
[right before the song ends, Morrissey takes off his t-shirt which he changed into to do the encore. Raises his arms above his head as if he was stretching, and the crowd goes wild]

    * There were no stage invaders tonight. No one made it up on stage. From where I was at, it didn't seem like anyone really tried.

    * Overall, a very good show. The band sounded really good. And Morrissey's voice sounded clearer.

    * Audience was about the same as last nights which made the show a very pleasant one. I guess everyone's getting older now(?).

    * As I exited the Wiltern, I noticed right outside on both sides of the street (on Wilshire and on Western) several people set up trying to sell hot dogs. You could of smelled them a mile away. No one seemed interested.

    * Until tomorrow......

Made 2 remarks to Julia (lucky girl). One last comment: To the idiots (usually drunk people) who think it's okay to cut in front of you at the last minute while waiting for the band to come out, stop being so damn inconsiderate. We wait, sweat and are crushed to stay in a spot where we can see. Us true fans don't need jerks to push their way through. You want a good view? Get there early.

  • Some friends of a friend had floor tickets but were turned away when it reached capacity. Bugger. Anyway, I met some cool people at the show (and a few morons). Hi to the two brothers and their vegetarian friend with the heart-shaped Chey patch from Riverside. I'm horrible with names! Hi also to Frank from Frisco who got a setlist and is sending me a scan. It was nice chatting with you all in line!

The crowd had great energy tonight, with the exception of a few of those same morons again with an excess of it.

Morrissey and The Lads were superb. I was really surprised and pleased that Moz didn't play the exact same setlist as he did at the Grove, or even on Thursday night at the Wiltern. People are bitching that changing a few songs doesn't count, but they need to give Moz a break. At least he isn't playing the exact same set night after night as he has been known to do. He's made a few concessions to our wishes! All in all, it was a beautiful night (even though I had a bit of a problem getting home due to buses not showing up and my getting stranded in a bad part of town -- ah well).

Oh, and I saw Deano pull up in a van while I was waiting in line and I waved to him. He totally waved back! Yay. Now all I need is to get Boz (and I guess Mikey now too -- drat!) to wave to me, and I've have been acknowledged by all of the Lads.

  • ok. i wasn't going to comment until i saw at least two shows (i'm scheduled for all five) because frankly, the first night was in my opinion, lackluster at best. this had to do with a few things though:

    1. i was in the last tier of the floor.
    2. i forgot my glasses.
    3. the lighting was murky and just very drab.

last night made all the difference and i think it had to do with the fact that i was on the rail just in front of the pit. an amazing vantage point - eye-level with the band. plus the lighting was far better - instead of the blues and reds that he was continuously bathed in the first night, everything was much clearer the second night. basic white spotlights were used and the whole stage in general was brightly lit up. even the band had a bigger stage presence due to this very fact. the first night, the lads were literally in shadows for most of the performance - someone in crew must have said something because it was the difference between night and day.

i'm not sure about the specifics of the set-list (i'll leave that to the pathetic souls who brought pen and paper and scribbled down song titles as they were performed), but i will mention that many of the new slow songs really grinded the show to a stop. the crowd was already lethargic to begin with, but the slow torch songs stopped any sort of momentum the gig had. i mean, i know this isn't 1986 anymore, but i miss the punchy sets of yore. the mic cord whipping, the way he'd drape himself over a monitor, even the rare self-flagellating jig.

this tour sees morrissey incredibly reserved - gentlemanly and proper. this is what's setting the tone of the reserved crowds. monkey see, monkey do. when our hero shows a bit of life on stage (most prominently during "first of the gang" and "daddy's voice - which is an incredibly catchy tune and should be a single), the crowd goes apeshit. when he falls back into a slow song ("forgiven jesus" and "lazy dykes" - maybe great on the lp, but not recommended for the stage), he's very subdued which in turn renders the audience motionless. not that i want a bunch of assholes pogo-ing all over the place, but i just found it weird how unenthusiastic the crowd was for the majority of the night. but this the plight of the stage of his career...

i think that anyone who says that these last few shows aren't up to snuff are the same people who saw him in 1991 (and in rare cases during his tenure in the smiths) and are used to morrissey, boz and gary smashing guitars, using lots of feedback and the occasional stage invasion. i saw the 1986 show at the universal amphitheatre and morrissey went after the audience with something to prove. today, he's won over the crowd so he knows that all he has to do it wrinkle a brow or run his fingers through his hair and the audience will burst out in near tears.

still, a total improvement from the wiltern's first night. but a few specific observations:

+ the saying hello to "droolia" is getting old. no, i'm not jealous, but is she really deserving? because of that fanzine with absolutely no content? ok, whatever.

+ the keyboard player is a nice touch. mikey fills a lot of gaps and every song is given a lush gloss to it. specifically "hairdresser," "a rush and a push," and "i know it's gonna happen." there is one song that he ruins though - sounds like he's using a third-rate casio. i think it's "i'm not sorry."

+ the set list must be scrambled up a bit. he knows people are going to more than one show and in many cases all five nights (i'm sure he sanctioned that five-night package deal). why not dip into his huge catalog? one new song a night in favor of another is not "changing the set list." it's his show, he can do whatever he wants, but we're keeping him in dolce & gabanna, we can at least ask for a few rarities, right?

+ the "subway train" intro is brilliant - can't wait for it to show up on bootlegs.

+ a few funny quips, but he wasn't as talkative on the second night as he was dur

  • My favorite quote from Friday night was before playing the encore song, IBEH, he stated, "I now know the importance of being...ERNESTO."

Though, I think he should stop being sooo condescending towards the boys. The boys have been with him in thick and thin, but referring to the boys as "the bland," is really inappropriate and disrespectful. Also, after introducing the band, he states..."can you believe they mine...me." I don't really know if he meant "mind" or "mine." Two different connotations that he is notoriously known for.

Thursday night, my favorite quote was in a weak american accent, "The Dave Matthews band rocks!"

    he's such a silly boy...
