  • rhino: so, morrissey--it's definitely our pleasure putting out a 'best of' collection culled from your impressive catalogue.

moz: um, err...well, i've got to feed my feline companion and keep those miserable sods on morrissey-solo chafing for new material--which, by the way, has been written and simply awaits a handsome record contract to find its place on the racks at virgin and tower.

rhino: are you planning a tour to support this release [moz frowns confusedly]--meaning, the 'best of' compilation?

moz: oh, of course, a tour will definitely be in order. i've never performed in the basque country, and i would really like to reach out to that segment of my audience that has really pulled through during the lean years...and as you know, there have been many...

  • A new interview? New pictures? Gee, do we even deserve it? Because you know, nobody really cares for new songs any longer! New gimmicks we'll keep us completely satisfied!! My only complaint is, why didn't Rhino include a track with recordings of His Mozzness' cat's purrs and meows? Why not a complete bonus CD called "Cat Sounds"? I mean, since the feline's proper caring and upbringing seems to be the only thing Morrissey occupies himself with right now, why not go all the way?

  • This is a good compilation for two reasons.

First, although the song selection does not include many of my faves, it is a selection which
will be very appealing to someone hearing Moz
for the first time. Someone who has heard vague
mentions of some Morrissey fellow and wants to take a nibble.

Second, obviously Morrissey is taking part in this because he must be concerned that he has been AWOL too long. And this will help people
not forget about him...WHILE HE MAKES HIS NEW RECORD!

  • It's becoming clear that Morrissey is more intersted in posing for pix on rialroad tracks and galavanting around the local music scene in the greater Los Angeles area than producing more music, or if he does have new material (ha!), releasing it. Which is fine by me, but only if he tells us all that so I can stop holding my breath. Maybe Cat Stevens will put out another album soon....

  • Looking through the setlist I realise that even though I think the whole album is a ripp-off and totally useless, it could make a nice present for someone you want to introduce to Morrissey, because it's got a lot of the reasonably "easy-listening" stuff on it. But I've lost enough friends over trying to get them into Morrissey, so I won't do that.

By the way, is this a world-wide release just the US? Oh I hope international....imagine the shock of coming over one of these tracks on German radio. They will have to call the doctor on me.

  • For several years now I've been collecting bits of info about a possible new release, in his interviews and here too. I thought that expecting one was not against what he wished himself, I always understood he had new material but could not manage to find a record deal to release that. I'm shocked now, I confess, but at the same time I know it's too early to decide that he won't release anything new - there were those rumours about some "Mexican feeling" in his new material, not just one, and his last interview in Q too.
Yes, I guess that this new compilation can only be explained as a way to introduce Moz to new listeners, and it might even be the case that distribution of the old albums was to become difficult because of Mercury - but this I know nothing about, it is just something that crossed my mind. I know that his original albums are not too easy to be found here any longer, but I guess that can be explained for other reasons too.
Of course, he does not owe me anything. If that's it, and just it, it is still ok, though I have to admit that I feel somewhat uncomfortable about it.

I know the ache that overcomes the brothers and sisters when their ears CRY OUT for new material!

  • Think about it. How old are you? Chances are 25-38. I know we have a ton of younger and older fans here as well, thankfully, but the bulk fit into that target range.
Compilations and best of's appeal to non-fans, younger fans and casual fans that see it as a good bargain (Oh yeah...check this out...I liked that sun and air song in the 80's...think I will get this...)

Compilations = new fans = greater demand for the artist = album companies seeing him as even more profitable = more $$$ for a contract = more NEW MATERIAL releases for all of us

    3 things to ponder:
    1. Michael Jackson's last album went 6X platinum and he is just this month releasing an album after 6 YEARS!!! (I could have picked a better subject but you get the point.) SoundScan has projected it will hit 10X platinum status. During this downtime Jackson took a heavy beating in the US press as Moz did in the UK press. What he did do during those 6 years is release compilation CDs and DVDs.
    2. Isn't it nice to see the Mozzer release one under HIS OWN terms? ...and on a great label to boot! (Has anyone listened to Rhino's Bowie at the Beeb release? It's flawless.) Rhino is so cool they even released a Jobriath CD!
    3. I know it's Son and Heir so no flaming e-mails :)

  • I think the good people here need to unwind a little.

First off, Morrissey has already made more amazing records and given more kick ass performances than dozens of other artists combined. As far as I'm concerned, that man now deserves to do as he damn well pleases.

Second, record companies re-issue stuff REGARDLESS of what the artists want. If you think the situation with Moz is outta hand, you'd all be having grand mal seizures if you were fans of The Fall. Go take a look at their discography; for every Moz compilation there are at least four Fall comps.

As for all the talk about the future and new material -- I don't know what's going to happen, and neither does anyone else.

And that one, thats right one....CD is technically not available for sale in the US. Try finding it in Omaha or even West Covina... Yes .I know the enlightened can find it on-line etc. Bona Drag , World of Morrissey and My Early Burglary Years ARE NOT "best of's". Play them if you dont believe me! They were stop gap collections of un-collected single sides and LP tracks issued between proper LP's. If you have all of the tracks on this US issued "proper" best of .You are already a guest at the party. Don't Buy It! No one will make you.You don't need it .Its not for you. No one will mind. • I love morrissey, I really do, and I truely do believe that if he could make more albums, he would. I just don't know who to blame for my feelings. I feel like i'm in some wierd abusive relationship. At the end of this relationship....will I be dumped, dooped and truely dissapointed? I feel like, the person I'm in the relationship with is just leading me on. Asking me ever so sweetly to please wait. I know its gonna happen someday. Like every relationship, I don't have the answers for that, and with love...I can only hold on to find out because the pain of leaving would be to great, and I'd just think about em all the time anyway....so here i am. I here there is a new studio album in the making.
I enjoyed Malujusted, his last album with all new material on it, but that fluffy cowboy love music with to much base and not enough beat kick..just doesnt fly in L.A. So whatever...for now I will hold on for another day...the best of will pass. I look forward to his new stuff. If the next one turns out to be another malujusted, I dont expect much turn around in his career. Whatever the case may be...I will always be one of the last of. I will carry a song inside me wherever I go, and I won't forget the ones that saved my life. So it will be ok for me in the end. As for the Legend Of MORRISSEY, well, who knows, probably won't matter til he's dead. That will grab all those with albums out now, who were inspired by him...it will get there attention...and in death, they will again remember.
In the end: Elvis, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Nirvana, Madonna, The Cure, Metallica, Bjork, Paul McCartney, John Lennon,The Smiths, and Morrrisey will be amoung the greatest, and unapreciated.
    Good night, and thank you.

  • Please, no more "reissue, repackage" references, or any others from that song. I almost wish that song had never been written.

IMO, Morrissey he has already offered as much as he could possibly offer in the form of The Smiths and his early solo years. I don't understand the sentiment of many Morrissey fans that Morrissey has given up on them. I guess this mentality is more readily found in the younger, or newer Morrissey fans. The point is, Morrissey was from the 80's. That was his "time." The fact that he had such a successful solo career way past his Smiths years is remarkable. All bands, no matter how great they once were, *will* creatively decline if they continue to make music for a long time. Most of what bands have to say is during the crucial 2-4 years of their existence. Then either they have to change their image, express new things, or go on a creative decline. For Morrissey it's not as simple as changing his image. He has to change what he expresses. And he has attempted this in several of his latest albums, but it is apparent to me that the best things he had to say were during his years in The Smiths and early solo years. (with few exceptions) Of course this is not to say that his next album will not be a great album, but we should be thankful for any album at all. Most bands from the 80's, even popular ones, have not made any more albums since the 80's, or have made far fewer than Morrissey has.

To my knowledge, he *has* stated his interest in making a future album. So what is all this whining about? I used to think Morrissey fans were intelligent, feeling people. I guess it's just the people on this messageboard.
