I just checked the Other Music website for a review of Death Cab for Cutie's newest album and found a link to a band called Low and their cover of "Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me." The song, in RealAudio format, is available here.

The cover itself is actually pretty horrible, but it's good for a laugh. (They made it sound like mid-period Elton John meets the whiny theatrics of Soundgarden, so be warned...)

  • If you aren't familliar with this band, then check them out. Not only do the vocals make you feel chills up your spine, they are also reminiscent of deep winter (much like the winters in Duluth, Minn where they are from). I can hardly hear anything that resembles Elton John or Soundgarden in this cover. They also happen to be big fans of Morrissey, probably the motivation for this cover in the first place.

  • If Low's cover sounded anything like Elton John or Soundgarden, I'm afraid I'd be spending my days on chriscornell-solo.com.

  • Very nice. It sounds like The Bad Seeds with a different singer. Elton John? You must be joking.

  • I had made some disparaging comments about Low covering this song on the previous news item. Although I'm a fan of Low's, I was totally offended by what they did to "Transmission" and was very reluctant to hear them butcher another one of my heroes.
BUT. I am now eating my words. I think this cover is completely gorgeous and over the top and maybe one of the best things Low has ever done. The production is great too. The back artwork for this single is made to look like the backside of the Smiths first record-- burgundy with grey printing. And the b-side is beautiful too. All in all a great package.
And by the way, what effing planet are you from, that you've heard of Death Cab for Cutie (had to get that name drop in, didn't you?) and not Low??? :) Please go out and buy their record "The Curtain Hits The Cast". It's amazing.

  • ...and I still don't like it. (The Elton John reference, by the way, came from the beginning of the track, which made me think of "Harmony" (a song that I quite like), and the Soundgarden reference came from the swing of the drum/guitar bit once the song gets "moving.")

Of course, my favorite Smiths covers thus far are a toss between Kirsty MacColl's "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby" and Martin Newell's "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others," so I'm pretty biased...) I will try to get some of Low's other albums, though, because I trust your judgement and NEED NEW MUSIC!

In other news, of course I'm going to drop Death Cab for Cutie's name! Their new album is one of the best of the year -- that is, if you're going to trust my opinions, which many of you aren't. ;-)

And that Morrissey guy -- he's pretty good, eh? I'm stoked for the digitally remastered fun-fest that is in our future. Go, Rhino!
