In a new biography about Nirvana's much missed front man Kurt Cobain written by Charles Cross, titled "Heavier than Heaven", in Chapter 16, on page 208 there is a Morrissey mention. In describing a November 28th appearance on The Top of the Pops where Nirvana performed "Smells Like Teen Spirit", though only the vocals were live, a funny thing happened. Instead of trying to perform a near lip-synced rendition of the song, which was quickly becoming very popular, Kurt sang the song in the most slowed down seemingly Gothic sounding voice possible. If you have seen the "Nirvana Live Tonight Sold Out" video this show appears on that tape. Its the one where the fans are clapping to the beat, while Kurt in silly Sunglasses plays the guitar with no hands and sings as though he is heavily sedated. Guess who Kurt was imitating as he mocked the Top of the Pops? From the book... "Kurt hatched a plan with Novoselic and Grohl to make a mockery of their performance. As the backing track played, Kurt sang the vocals in a slowed-down, almost Vegas-like lounge version; he was attempting, he later claimed, to sound like Morrissey."I find this amazing. Firstly that whole appearance and disrespect they showed the TOTP is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and now that I know who Kurt was imitating makes it that much more enjoyable. Secondly it is a far as I know the only reference that shows Kurt Cobain knew who Morrissey was, which as a fan of both, for reasons unbeknownst to me, is comforting. If you want to hear the song I know it appears on a bootleg, I don't remember which one, but it's probably on one of these boots. http://home.wanadoo.nl/nirvanu/ --- UPDATE (Sept. 24): Link to mp3 from Smiths

Kurt Cobain was a big fan of Bowie, and also of C86 bands like The Pastels. (I think he once said The pastels were his favourite band) so he was obviously fairly well scholled on UK indie from the 80s. Also, Courtney Love was a Teardrop Explodes groupie, and once lived in the same falt as Ian Macculloch. It's pretrty plain that Morrissey would have know who Morrissey was, and probably would have been a Smith fan to some degree or other.

If you listen to the mp3 it doesn't sound like Morrissey (who does anyway?,) but Cobain tries hard not to scream as he drags his voice as much as he can in a crooner-like manner.
Now remember - it's a TOTP's performance, it's England - how many crooners do you know of in there? Only one, The Mozz. It seems obvious to me.
I believe the Brave Ones are all connected - but not in a Morrissey-Diana kinda phenomena:
Bowie called the Pixies the band of the 80's; Marr called Nirvana the band of the 90's; Cobain wanted to be in the Pixies; both Frank Black and Morrissey have sang with Bowie; Cobain covered a Bowie song; Cobain confessed with Stipe; Stipe confessed with Morrissey; The Smiths influenced britpop; the Pixies influenced Grunge; etc etc etc...
They know and love each other. These are my heroes. I love them all.
