Come see the world's best Smiths cover band at SF's Kimo's this Sunday night, Sept. 23rd. Show starts at 9:00 pm, cover charge is $5. (flyer attached). Bring flowers!!!

Read what the SF Bay Guardian has to say:

Sunday Sept. 23rd,
Strangeways.
Most Smiths tribute bands take their name from a song written by the beloved '80s emotive band -- These Charming Men being one obvious choice. Local outfit the Nguyens, clever lads that they are, went for something more roundabout by using the most common Vietnamese surname as their moniker. Otherwise, the group is a straightforward homage to the band named after the most common English surname. Their cover of "Handsome Devil" available on the UnCool Beans No. 9 compilation (Cool Beans!) and taken from the Smiths'early singles compilation Hatful of Hollow (Rough Trade) did not stray too far from the source. But will the Nguyens' lead singer and guitarist go the way of Morrissey and Marr and eventually have "artistic differences"? (Lord knows, it wouldn't be the first time.) The Nguyens and Brian and Chris open for Midnight Laserbeam. 9 p.m., Kimo's, 1351 Polk, S.F. $5. (415) 885-4554. (Deborah Giattina)

  • Some help please. I am interested in starting an all Korean Smiths cover band, but I can't decide on a name. Which is better, The Kims or The Parks, as they're both the most common Korean surname?

  • I attended the show at Kimo's tonight.

The band was quite good. The selection of songs was very good.

The singer did not meet my expectations, and did not complement the band well. I don't know if he was drunk, or just so incredibly full of himself, or what.

Some bands play to please the crowd, others play to please themselves. It is without doubt that "The Nguyens" singer was singing for himself.

I went to see a Smiths cover band, not a morrissey impersonator.

This guy was way out of control, and exaggerated every one of morrissey's traits except for a/ shyness and b/ wonderful singing voice.

The kid had an okay voice, but he couldn't sing the song without parlaying ever syllable into a morrissey-ism.

I love Morrissey. I left the show in the middle thinking that I wouldn't exchange bubblegum or methodone for my heroin in the form of Morrissey.

Morrissey is someone whom has always been classy, and true to himself.

The Nguyens as a band were pretty good, with some small exceptions (such as playing the songs in a different key, almost seemed to be a major key instead of a minor key, giving the song a plan feel). The singer unfortunately was true to noone, swearing and acting like a poor caricature of Morrissey for the benefit of himself and his drunk friends.

  • hell, why not?

there are quite a few of them, some of them touting to be "the best" or "the ultimate" cover band. so why don't we settle this, once and for all!!!

and if such a thing occurs, perhaps it should be held in a fairly 'neutral' location - 'neutral' in that there won't be too much regional loyalty to any particular band. so i guess that means LA and SF are out of the question.
