Adam "You'll Have To Go Sideways" Leonard writes:

From the NME 18/08/01 Doves Article:
"When Julian Casablancas has a drink" Jimi warns "he goes nuts." He launches into his favourite Strokes anecdote. Apparently the two bands were in LA having post-gig drinks in a British theme bar. None other than Morrissey was nearby, at a table with 3 girls. "It was fucking strange, man" Jimi laughs "He kept sending these girls over to say 'Morrissey is sat in the corner if you'd like to talk to him'. He is dead shy, but it was like he was holding fucking court. We were like "We're cool, tell him to come over and join us". So he came over and sat down, and Julian started calling him a fucking faggot. I was like "just leave it out, Julian" and he was all "Jimi's upset with me, man - what's the problem?" and then he kept doing it!

"Morrissey just looked at him an laughed. You could tell he was thinking 'OK, you little upstart, do your worst.'"

  • This story is just so strange. I was waiting for more and it just kind of ends. Moz has been hanging out with a number of girls lately. Maybe he does fancy girls after all. I do think he should more time in the studio and less getting sauced. Oh well, as long as he's getting laid!

  • ...but that doesn't justify anyone flaunting their big mouthed homophobia at anyone (even if it wasn't Morrissey)... and what gives someone such as Casablancas, setting out on the road to stardom, such licence.. His work has yet to stand the test of time... he should learn hunilty before he burns out and fades away before he has even started..

..and will we be whistling Strokes tunes in 15 years time.. hmmm.. the jury has just sta... and will retunr a verdict shortly...

Interesting tale though and Jimi from the Doves looks quite hard as well... Good to have him on Morrisseys shoulder just in case it all kicked off!!

  • Holy Shit! I cannot believe that I was at the same club that night. I looked over and there was none other than our man sitting with 3 (nice looking but very young) girls. Moz was drinking his usual Corona and the girls all had mixed drinks. I waited forever for Moz to be alone (I hate interrupting someone when they have guests). I briefly strolled over and said hello. He said he had just gotten back from vacation and needed a good night out in LA. I asked him to sign my napkin and as he was getting ready to, the girls came back and broke his concentration. I briefly said goodbye and returned to my table. I am not big fans of the other bands mentioned, so I did not recognize them. I am still on cloud nine...

  • So, a musician gets a bit drunk and starts calling other people a 'faggot'. That's pathetic. If I was there I would have bloody lamped that little shite.

    Why?

    1. Morrissey is my hero and I don't like anyone slagging him off in front of me, never mind in front of him.

    2. No matter who you are talking to, you don't call someone a faggot. No matter the reason. It's not an insult and instead just makes the person (or the 'nobody') making the 'insult' look stupid.

I shall never buy another strokes record again after reading this. I already have two singles and doubt I'll play them again.

The Strokes can kiss my arse.

  • What a loser that Julian guy is. The story is even worse when you consider who his father is. John Casablancas runs one of the biggest talent agencies in the country. I am sure a couple of his fathers connections "helped" to put our boy Julian in the position to even be having drinks with the guys from the doves/morrissey in the first place.
It is obvious the guy is an insecure idiot who can talk crap about someone without even getting to know the person.
The clock is ticking and from what i can tell, 13 of his 15 minutes have passed. Headlining the Troubador in Hollywood was as good as it will probably get for them.
While, unless Morrissey decides to have them support him on his next tour-as roadies!

  • It surprises me Morrissey could even be bothered. If these two were in the same bar, judging by the music, I wouldn't even think twice about speaking with either of them. The Doves album lost souls is bile, sonic noise which amounts to nothing. The best compliment I could give it, is the sleeve, which is strewn with photos of boxers(whoah, wonder where they got that idea?) As for the Strokes, this is just fashion, folks- dressed up like music, I have the 5 song ep and have heard the new lp and I may be hard pressed to choose who are more musically inclined, the high school boys who rehearse the 3 chords they know in the garage next door or these "highly touted" Strokes. So, come on Moz, stop wasting time...unless you like being laughed at.

anyway i heard on the grapevine that the lovely (NOT) jimmy was a woman 7 years ago.

apparently his dislike of Mozz stems from when he was a woman he wanted to be a cool guy.
so he had the operation and was really pissed off when the man the operation changed him into wasnt no way near the man Mozz is....

so there u have it guys.....jimmy strokes has had the sex change op. fascinating stuff.

    wot a tosspot.

p.s. jimmy's previous name was jennifer cassidy, hence jimmy casablancas.

  • I just wanted to say that the Strokes couldn't lick Morrissey's shiny black shoes!! I bought the three track EP and their is nothing of substance on it at all. It just sounds like they have listen to way to many Fall and Iggy records. Wow a new band thats ripping off someone else how original. Maybe Oasis better one up them and start to copy The Monkees.

  • At the risk of offending everyone, it sounds to me like Julian was just having some drunken fun and that Morrissey himself took it as such.

No, no, no--I'm not condoning drunken (or sober) gay bashing. But sometimes you have to laugh at this sort of thing. And by laugh I mean laugh AT Casablanca's immaturity and stupidity.

I'm sure Julian is no Einstein. In fact, I've seen the Strokes play twice and he strikes me as being quite stupid. But then, The Strokes are making fun, energetic rock 'n' roll music and Morrissey has done nothing that good since 1987. Surely that doesn't excuse Mr. Casablancas behavior but it does kind of contribute to my being able to laugh the incident off a bit.

Julian Casablancas may be a bit of a dumb ass but god bless him for releasing the first good Rock album in a long time.

  • I always find it interesting when people enjoy the music of a band until they find out more about the individual members. It's funny how it works that way. I think there's probably a lot of jerks playing rock and roll but we're lucky to not know exactly who. I'll bet it's a lot easier to turn into a jerk when you're rich and famous. Still, I liked the strokes before (although they're nothing compared to moz) and I still like them. I'm guessing julian was probably just being an obnoxious drunk.

  • I figure what Julian meant by saying, "You little faggot..." was not meant to be taken as a personal insult to Morrissey himself...

    but rather....

Julian was probably piss drunk and saw the girls Morrissey sent over...and Julian thinking he's this hot new rock star was thinking, "Hollywood's fucking my kind of town, theirs chicks all over me tonight..." then his heart sank when he realized that the girls where sent over by Morrissey.

Julian not wanting to be further embarressed by walking over their to Morrissey's table, rather made Morrissey come over. So when Morrissey came over (sporting a grin I would like to believe) chuckled at Julian for thinking these women appoarched Julian on their own accord. So Julian in return calls Morrissey "...a fucking faggot..." for pulling such a stunt on a drunken New Yorker like Julian.

It was pure beer drinking laughs .... thats all and nothing more....

  • The entire context of the situation is too vague to even understand exactly what had happened. Obviously, whatever took place, Morrissey seemed to be more entertained than he was offended.

I have loved morrissey and the smiths for over 10 years now; I think morrissey is a lyrical genius and generally I just love the feeling and emotion involved in his music. That is what is most important to me.

I recently saw the Strokes in portland and was totally amazed by their live show. I was also impressed by how humble and grateful Julian was towards the crowd. I highly doubt he actually made those comments the MOZ, it is very difficult for me to claim NME as a reliable source for any information. How healthy has morrissey's relationship with that publication been in past anyway?

The Strokes are an excellent band and have made some incredible music recently. I would think it to be quite a shame to ignore the freshness that they are bringing to the world of music. In my opinion, they are all about the music and whatever success they acheive is well-deserved.

  • If I would have my admiration for artists in things other than quality of music I would have no-one to follow.

I don't like tha Strokes, but I think they have potential and could convince me to buy their next output if it happens to be great. If after Pablo Honey Radiohead (BTW, one of my very favorite bands) delivered such a great album as The Bends Why can't the Strokes do something similar.

A bisexual friend of mine is a fan of Eminem and has been preached because Eminem is homophobic. But she admires him because of the quality of their music.

BTW, I think Doves are excellent; if they keep the effort, they will be a classic band. It is just a matter of time, since they have just started as well.
