Just got word that "The Bed Took Fire" (Morrissey/Stephen Street MAY '91), an unreleased early version of "At Amber" is circulating on Napster. From what I understand, it is indeed real. I think this is the first time (and hopefully not the last time) an unreleased song has been made available via Napster.

  • there is no difference between "the bed took fire" and "at amber" other than a few minor things in the background music (nothing really different so much as produced differently--the same tracks were used). the vocal track is exactly the same. having said this, i hope there are more "early versions" lurking about.

  • Awww why can't the other unreleased songs be out on Napster? I already have the "My Early Burglary Years" At Amber. Oh well I guess we all have to wait and find out don't we?

  • the background music is actually a little improved i think. it sounds a wee bit more dynamic. the vocal track probably is the same one used on the released version...maybe we'll get "striptease with a difference" or "november the 2nd" someday...

  • I saw Moz's most talked about unreleased song, "Striptease With A Difference" on Napster once, but as soon as I started to download, the person signed off. Maybe someone out there can grab this gem at the right time, maybe more then one person has it on Napster.

I know its a lot, but I'll you forever if you would.

Mmmm.... I once heard that by the time of the release of "Suedehead - The Best Of..." there was supposed to be a "Limited Edition CD" containing "Striptease With A Difference", "Oh Phoney" and "November The Second".
Maybe this is just the beginning and all those song will see the light shortly..... or maybe this is the end and all of us who downloaded "The Bed Took Fire" will be fired from Napster because "someone near the man" (remember what happened to "Frankly Vulgar"?) doesn't want those files traded for free.

  • one thing i really like about this version of the song is how at about 1:56 when he sings "im calling you from the foyer..." its a bit more dramatic as almost all the music except for some light guitar is removed. the snare sounds like its off a drum machine (not unheard of, just think of november spawned a monster, break up the family etc...) and its a bit too overbearing.

also, listen close at the end, as the song fades out, you can hear clicks. it sounds like this mp3 was created off vinyl. anyone agree?

    and finally, a side note...

a few years back morrissey was asked by a fan if he was ever going to play at amber live and he said "why would i do that? its an awful song" or something like that. so now we get two versions of a song he doesn't care for much.

    • Haha... I noticed that whole dramatic change ("I'm calling you from the foyer") This may actually be a better version. Or maybe it's just because I listened to Maladjusted 2 times today! Oh Morrissey We need NEW music unless you want us to start remixing all your best songs and exchanging them with each other on napster!
Ps. I am now searching for "my name is mortimer" someone once told me they had it and of course would not let me hear it.

  • I've just heard this song and ... does anyone know if it's the real ting? I mean, it sounds like somebody went and remixed AT AMBER ... I guess my question is ... Does anybody have proof that this was the original BED TOOK FIRE ... Because the remix work is very "late-90s", specially the parts where the drums stop and get back in, that sounds like it was done not long ago. Anyway, I just hope it's the real thing, and not some remix someone (who knows who) did.

  • Rarities (Score:2, Informative)

That's great to see some unreleased material starting to be unearthed.

I agree with many on the board that it would be a fine thing in these slow times to put some energy towards trying to find some rarities for The Smiths fan community.

At one time or another most members of the band when asked have stated that there is not much rare material that was not released. I think this is probably the case but as suggested in their statements I also believe that there are SOME rarities that have not seen the light of day. Whether Morrissey(solo) or Smiths material, here is a starting list of items that I believe do still exist somewhere in a recorded form:

"A Fool Such As I" (Elvis cover by The Smiths - first few bars of the song inadvertantly deleted)

"I Want A Boy For My Birthday" (Full Version)

"Frankly Mr. Shankly" (Alt. Version with Trumphets)

    "Kitt"

    "Oh Phoney"

    "Striptease With A Difference"

"Please Help The Cause Against Lonliness" (Morrissey Vocal Version)

"November Spawned A Monster" (Alt Version)

In addition, I feel that there is probably some terrific footage of the legendary Wolverhapton concert residing in a vault somewhere. The concert was filmed by Tim Broad (I.E. Clips of the concert in "Hulmerist"), professionally recorded (I.E. "Sweet & Tender Hooligan" live b-side) and professionally photographed (I.E. Music articles of the time). Yet, in terms of a complete document of this amazing concert, the best we seem to have as fans is a poor audience bootleg recording. Would anyone else be interested in seeing/hearing the full show?

I am in no way trying to say that this is a complete or even acurrate list of the rare material that may be in existence. This is simply my best guess based on information collected over the years. Maybe this list can act as a starting point for any other interested fans to try to confirm the existence of any of these items, add other possiblities to the list or better yet offer bits of information that might lead to some of these items becoming available.

The collective knowledge of The Smiths community could probably unearth some pretty cool stuff.

    Happy New Year!,
    Ben

  • I think that "Bed Took Fire" made it's way onto a test-pressing at some point, and was later replaced with the current official version known as "At Amber." So this song is not as rare as something like "Striptease With A Difference" which is only known because Morrissey mentioned it in an interview.

Unfortunately, I don't have any more details than that. I got this information from a friend who has the vinyl, but I never pressed the issue. The apparent scratch of the needle at the end of the MP3 makes the story that I heard a bit more plausible.

  • This mp3 of At Amber is the original Steven Street-produced version that was recorded in the "Playboys/Interesting Drug" sessions. When Street and Morrissey split, this track was left over and was remixed by the new producers, Clive Langer & Alan Winstanley. That became the "At Amber" that appeared on Piccadilly Palare.

Not to throw a wrench into the works, but I'm not 100% sold on the idea that the mp3 in question is actually titled "Bed Took Fire." It may very well be, but then again it may just be "At Amber".

  • Sorry to disappoint anyone but the version of "Bed Took Fire" that resides in EMI's vaults is exactly the same as the released version of At Amber. Unless the MP3 referred to is an early demo version, it's no different. There are some finished masters of unreleased tracks like Oh Phoney & Striptease with a Difference etc as you probably know.
