so, at a young age, an idea is instilled that girls need to go to college, pursue their career, and then put everything on hold at age 30 to start having children.

i've come to realize that such a belief is born out of convenience for the men who don't want to be tied down to a family at a young age coupled with the phony-baloney belief that "women can do anything."

Not that women CAN'T do everything, but to me, it's born more out of the angry "quit your whining because women are now equal" when in reality, women aren't equal.

"why look! you can put off having a family for 5 years while you focus on your 'career'."

ok, so then you get a job, but end up getting paid less because you are a liability to the company. they see you as a baby machine, so you are steered towards careers that don't have much of a future. then, you start your family, but your career is still derailed because you are spending the next 10 years having to choose between work or running home and taking care of a tyke with a runny nose.

In reality, life would be easier if you have the kids at a younger age so that you're over that hump once your career blooms. The kids can take care of themselves a bit more while you can do what you need to do.

However, let's be honest and say that not "settling down" is a boon to the guys. They can continue playing around for a few more years and eventually find somebody younger when they decide to start having kids.

I guess I'm grousing about this because Robo seems to have the "I envy you because you can go anywhere and do anything!" mentality. no, i'm under a time limit while he can be Tony Randall or Paul mcCartney and produce kids at age 70. Plus, on top of that, as a man, more doors will be open to him the moment he quits playing around. As for me, I pretty much know my prospects are highly limited based upon how my career played out before I went to law school and how it appears to be shaping up now that I'm about to graduate. The big firms don't want women. They'll hire one or two to make it look like this isn't the game that they're playing, but that's what's going on. In other words, I'm about to go back out into the world being a cog in the wheel again...and for what?

I think my grandparents lived smarter than that. They all settled down at a young age because that's what you did. There were no grandiose thoughts that ANYBODY male or female was going to be a big shot. You married at a young age and continued working on your own farm as there was no point in burdening your parents with you.

Now, we have an entire generation that, thanks to Oprah and 1980's sitcoms that had "a message", has led themselves to believe that everybody can be President of the US.

Suddenly, people my age have arrived at that point where they begin to realize that they're working some job where they're a monkey who is being paid little money and things aren't improving. I mean, sheesh, I thought at the very least having a college degree would get me a house and a car in a good part of town. There is no reason why I should have been living somewhere near the poverty level with no other prospects for all those years. ...except for the truth that the market is flooded with people such as myself and the fact that I'm a woman of childbearing age automatically devalues whatever qualifications I bring to the table.

In essence, a guy that does what I do (or even less than what I do) will always be looked upon more favorably because of that issue.

Have kids. As soon as you're someone's mom you automatically stop taking crap from other people. You get that scary mom vibe and people back off when you give them The Look. You will be mighty. It's not just the hormones - it's a superpower.
