MorrisseySoLow

Just a little play on words. No, I don't think so. Since the tone of the whole statement was serious and the fact that he used it twice. I appreciate those who came out in support of the site. I don't think anyone can really say what his career would look like if this site never existed. Maybe it would be the same but maybe not, but that doesn't mean all the hours I put into creating and maintaining the site and all the visitors who contribute should go without acknowledgment. So I think this this is what many of the visitors picked up on with this apparently harmless pun.

My opinion is that Morrissey has worked very hard for his success that he has achieved and he does not get the credit he deserves. I just think it's hypocritical to feel credit should be given in fairness if he is not going to do that himself.

I think this is the first time he has voluntarily mentioned the site, the other time on Janice Long he was asked about it directly. In the past I wished that he had mentioned the site but now it doesn't matter, the site will continue on until I feel like stopping or lose interest, no matter what he says or doesn't say.

Actually I have seen the "So Low" pun in the past, here's one reference from the general board from Jan. 2005 by "chairman of the bored" (link).

i too thought that i had seen "so-low" before but couldn't place it.

after reading chairman of the bored's posts, i don't think that they are anybody except a whiney baby along the lines of freeyourself. i realize that morrissey is also a whiney baby, but i couldn't see him obsessing about the site's moderation like this person unless morrissey has seriously fallen on hard times in terms of getting a life, so either great minds think alike, or...the other choice.

i think it sort of rankles fans because it is obvious that he views his internetters at morrissey-solo as being important enough to have some contact with, but he's doing it in this convoluted way of "but julia is the only worthy one" so i don't know what sort of message is being broadcast. if we're not that important, why doesn't he just email julia and discuss his own personal matters with her and screw the rest of us? why bother having a Q&A if he doesn't like us? more importantly, why doesn't he go back to having contact with the music press and prove that the majority of his fans have never seen a website in their entire lives? or is he simply more involved in the idea of being in a "war" with a group of fans and figures that this is the best way to piss them off?

i mean, even he has to know that 90+% of julia's business is this website. she doesn't have much of anything that lends itself to perpetual fan involvement, his own "official" boards are down, and if there are any major fan congregating places besides here, i don't really know anything about it. not that i've looked that hard, but there is obviously a reason why the trolls moan about their treatment but don't leave. either they love to bitch or they have nowhere else to go.

the slippery slope of censorship (Score:2, Insightful)
my first experience with message boards and chat rooms on the internet was in the 90's when ABC had message boards up for their soaps. As a fan of All my Children I used to go there to read what other fans had to say. There was one actor on the show who is particulary sexy. People used to write about him a lot. A group of the fans joined together to make a special fan club for him. Then they started sending messages to other fans who posted things on the board which they didn't think the actor would like (I was repremanded for commenting on his hairy chest--not respectful enough). Anyway, their whole purpose was to encourage people to only post compimenaty things about the actor--but of course, problem is, not everyone agreed what that meant. (my chest comment was meant to be a compliment).

Anyway, there was also a lot of just out-right negative stuff on the boards, and a lot of rumours and misinformation about the soaps. finally ABC terminated the message boards and I read somewhere that the executives said something like "why should we pay people to keep these boards up and running when it is just providing a forum for people to write trash about our actors and shows."

What I learned from watching the evolution and then destruction of those boards was: 1) if you put an open forum up, its really hard to censor what people write. Some things are so negative or obviously untrue that they should be deleted right away by the webmaster. But there is also a large gray area (like my comment about an actor's chest) which are not intended to be at all negative, but which some might find offensive. and 2) there are some people who really abuse the internet by hiding behind the anonymity it provides, to write horrible things. unfotunately these people can be found on almost any message board on the internet, including here.

All of this is to say that I think this site has tried to err on the side of allowing freedom of speech, and I respect you for that. Thank you.

      Hi David,
Just wanted to add my support during this time.

I think it is a good thing that this site treats all Morrissey stories equally - from sightings, record releases, gig reviews to accusations by former employees. We have a freedom to make our own minds up. And there is no moral guidance offered.

In other words, this site treats us like adults.

However, it irks me a lot when the trolls take over. I don't find the death threats and the name calling and the personal abuses anything other than empty posturing, but I do find it rather boring...

Are there any steps to be taken? (The banning of anonymous posts perhaps? - while allow stories to be submitted anonymously via an email address...? Or something along these lines... )

Anyway just wanted to add my support. I enjoy the site and the freedom of speech very much. In my book this is a great success.

      Congratulations and thanks again, David.

I'm an adult and can think things for myself and so Morrissey's opinion of it doesn't affect my judgement one way or another, and I think anyone with any maturity will feel the same and respect the fact you report information from all sides impartially instead of going down the road of some Rupert Murdock rag, and only allowing stories that are about things like how someone was blinded by the sunlight one day when they happened to catch sight of Morrissey's arse.

      Morrissey's soul-oh! (Score:1)
I've met Moz a few times and I can attest to this:

The people he finds most worthwhile (the times i've seen him) are tiny females that hang on every word, gesture, and sound the man makes. When people are around him, no-one speaks out of place. It is like Jesus himself has descended down to Earth upon some 10 year-old girl scouts to tell them the most splendid story they ever heard. As people scuttle around the campfire, he sits quietly and has TOTAL control of the conversation.

If anyone gets emotional, unless it is a cutsie-girlie type of emotional, he smiles, shrugs, then looks down and away. (In that order). And keeps his distance.

      My point:

Morrissey is easily threatened. He is a control freak who must have everything his own way, if one person even comes close to disrespecting him or invading his space...(which is akin to the distance between the main compound and front gates of the Pentagon), he looks for a way out. Any time i've been around him, i've shaken his hand, tell him that I love what he does, take a pic and peacefully back away. I've seen other people who do not know the S.O.P. of M-O-R-R-I-S-S-E-Y, and get either hurt, embarrassed, or both.

Julia fits this description perfectly. She is EXACTLY what Moz connects with as far as his fanbase is concerned. I'm not bashing her, she has every right to do what she does and no-one should tell her otherwise. But it is true that she cares more for making Morrissey happy than the TRUTH. Which is what our guy seems to be getting IT for.

I'll love what Mozzer has done till the day I die, but that doesn't mean that I will wholeheartedly agree with most of the ways that he acts, or the things he says. I don't think the "so-low" comment was meant to be too harsh (as harsh as most people are taking it), but he got his point across. I'm with David on this one. I think it lit a fire cracker up Moz's ass to have a Mike Joyce story up on the front page for a few days. And if this site wasn't that popular why would he care?! Although it wasn't meant to be an advertisement for his venture into ebay, i'm sure a helluva lot of people never would have known about it if they hadn't visited this site religiously for the past several years.

Big ups to my man david. In case you mistake that for brown-nosing, think again. He's gotten the crap beaten into him verbally and those rotten individuals are still around and don't seem to have lost anything but the time to get...I dunno...a job...a girlfriend...a life...you know...things that don't take up that much time at all.
