I am hated for Loving v. Virginia, 388 US 1 (1967)

Mildred Loving has died. She and her husband were arrested in the 1960s at their Virginia home for sleeping together. She was black, he was white. In the 1960s interracial marriage was illegal in Virginia. This brave couple took their case all the way to the US Supreme Court, and won. I owe them a personal debt of gratitude, as I directly benefited from their heroic fight. I have an interracial marriage. My husband and I were married in Virginia in 1999.

When I listen to Morrissey sing "I am hated for Loving" I always think of the Loving case. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Loving for what you did for our country.

To read that interracial marriage was illegal in the US as late as the 1960's!

Good God!

I saw this article on a news site and the heading, as I glossed over it, read something like, "Woman who opposed interracial marriage dies" I'm not even sure that's what it said, but in my mind, I thought that she was AGAINST it in the 60's so I didn't even bother to open it - but then later on that day I saw another article and read it and found out about her & her husband......
it's shocking that in '67 - people were still so dim....... that's only 40 years ago..... wow.....
it's just another thing we so take for granted, that we just take as fact, and don't even realize that someone had to stand up and do something for this to become OK....
