Morrissey Concert Exp # 5

My Brother Darin and I started out our trek to see Morrissey LIVE and in the flesh early
morning of April 6th 2009. We arrived at our destination in Minneapolis, MN at the State Theater to find that we could peek into the venue because all that held us eager Morrissey fans back were elegant glass doors adorned with black curtains on the front but we were scolded at by security early on for our peeking but that didn't stop other curious Morrissey fans because throughout the day as we
would come back to see if more Moz fans showed up we saw that they too peeked behind the
curtain. Since this being my FIRST Morrissey concert where I actually had a SEAT number
and reserved spot that meant no waiting in line for ONCE YESSS!!! So we decided to see the sites
around the area of the State Theater and just a block down was Game works which turned out
to be quite a fun spot to kill time at. We made a rock video of our heads singing and dancing
on cartoon bodies to the song Venus which I will upload for your youtube pleasure. Then we
played some resident evil type games except where you have a real gun amongst other games
they had on the first level. We finally made our way upstairs and come to find they had
COSMIC BOWLING and for us folk that live in the boonies of South Dakota this was a
treat!! So we bowled a round then after that excitement we made our way back to the State
Theater and by this time it was nearing 5 in the afternoon and the show was to start at 7:30 so
we decided it was time to get some grub and we made our way to a restaurant inside the state
theater called Rock Bottom and it lived up to its name! The food was at best OK and very
pricey. After that I decided to go back to my vehicle and get the tickets and my camera and my
brother was going to just chill and wait in the lobby area. I go outside and as I'm strolling
along on the sidewalk the sun shining down at me a big shadow is casted along me and I look
at a big silver bus turn towards the venue and I am thinking, Hmmmm...I wonder if that's
Moz's bus and it turns to go to the side of the venue about the side where his semi is
unloading gear into the building. As I am standing on the corner awaiting to see who comes
out I see HIM I know its HIM because I mean how do you MISS Morrissey's silhouette? So I
and the fellow walking in front of me take off running to the crowd that was already awaiting
him of about maybe 8 people of whom I believe have been following him around on the tour
from California. I rush over and he walks right in front of me shaking hands but refusing
pictures and all I can say is " Moz! Moz! Moz! just then his strikingly blue eyes turn and look
at mine and I just smile big he turns and I semi-shout, "how's the baby?" he gives me the
Morrissey look and smiles and goes into the venue and with that I am in shock I rush back
into the venue lobby to tell my brother what has just happened! I take him to the scene of the
excitement where the others are also freaking out about meeting the MAN!! I talk with the
others that met Morrissey and we discuss how surreal it was and after that Darin and I head
back to the truck to get the tix and camera. We decide to just wait inside the venue and at
about 6ish they open the doors and we were the first ones inside!!! I had pit tickets. The pit
consisted of a two row area that held about 30 of us lucky Morrissey fans. We were in the 2nd
row and upon talking with security it was my understanding that once Morrissey came on the
pit became sort of free for all and we could stand at the stage but till then we had to remain in
our seats. Sir John Betjamin's voice read to us a poem as we sat and awaited the show to
begin of which the security guard questioned me about asking, "what is this?" upon me telling
him he gave me a look like "oooohhhkay whatever" insert eye roll here. But after talking to
this security guard I came to find he was pretty cool and was surprised he didn't get a ticket for
the show because he knew Johnny Marr and had gone to see Modest Mouse in concert before.
Finally the house lights went down and The Courteeners took the stage opening up with
Cavorting. Now I actually was looking forward to seeing this band because they are fucking
brilliant in my opinion and so far the pit area was looking bleak with the Left side having NO
one in the front row yet and maybe 3 people in the 2nd row our side on the Right had 4 people
in the front and well the 2nd row had just me and my brother in it. At one point we kinda
danced in our whole row due to the awesome amount of room we had to do such. As The
Courteeners took the stage me and my brother stood up and started dancing like MAD!!! I
soon realized we were the ONLY ones in the WHOLE venue standing up, dancing! I couldn't
believe it and the place was still pretty empty as well. At one point the lead singer of The
Courteeners gave me and my bro a huge smile as if to give us props for cheering them on. I
love this band!! They went on to play their other hits such as Acrylic, Your Not Nineteen
Forever, That Kiss (i love that song), shameless, Yesterday today and probably tomorrow,
but it was a blast dancing almost what seemed to be a private show for me and my brother up
in front I almost felt like I was dancing in my own living room. At one point my brother yelled
we love you The Courteeners and the lead singer responded with well we love you too haha it
was awesome!! I got both of The Courteeners set lists too!! YAY!

After their set they began preparing the stage for Morrissey.
I was delighted to
watch the videos projected on the big sheet covering Morrissey's backdrop. Most of the videos
were of The Shocking Blue and others were of The New York Dolls some of it was stuff from
the last tour that he had played. The music that played on the speakers was music obviously
hand picked by Morrissey bands such as: Kristeen Young, Damien Dempsey, The New York
Dolls, and The Pretenders. I finally got up and asked the security guard I had spoken with
earlier if it was ok we stand at the stage and he was like yup as far as I know its free for all go
ahead so I got up there and the people in the front row pit were still seated and in my opinion
seemed like complete squares and were probably in their 30s and didn't seem like the concert
going types and one couple I believe went and complained to the house security because that's
when some head honcho security guy came in and was like okay everyone get back to your
seats in the pit because its not fair you 2nd row folks be in front of the front row people blah
blah blah...I was thinking to myself yeah I'm second row but I prolly paid twice what the front
row people paid so yes please Mr. security guard tell me about fair! (note: I purchased my
awesome tickets from ticketcyclone.com a top notch screw you in the ass for your money but
its worth it cuz its Morrissey scalper website) Anyways so NOW the rules changed...Security
was going to let the front row pit people get their shot at front row stage cling before us
second row pit folk. There was no barrier whatsoever we were right against the stage and
security was tight on the floor they had security on both L and R sides and a guy in the center
then ON the stage a huge lurch type dude to the R and on the L well was Morrissey's one and
only bodyguard who is made of stone. Me and my brother secured a good spot right against
the stage right side. I was happy. Morrissey opened with This Charming Man. He came out
with a sign that read Savage Beast and I shouted it should read: Sexy Beast but I don't believe
he heard me. I tried to record as much as I could but at one point Morrisseys personal
bodyguard shined me with the flashlight and mouthed to me no video no flash for pictures! and
I kinda like nodded like yeah whatever. I mean its not fair other people around me had
cameras too! GRRRR!!! It seemed like when I did get my camera out Morrissey shyed away
from our side I almost wonder if he is annoyed by people videotaping him at his show and
posting it on youtube? Thats the vibe I got. But I didn't care because at all my other shows I
never took my camera in but I told myself 'this time" I am taking it in dammit! haha Anyways
back to the show....now this show was the fifth time I've seen Morrissey and compared to the
other shows which I've had SUCH great experiences at this one actually was kind of a let down
it didn't seem like Morrissey was "into" it as much as he's been in the past. I think I saw his
posterior more than his face. He had his back to us most of the time! He also didn't dance or
do any Morrissey theatrics as much either. His singing performance though was top notch. He
was in full form there! At one point he handed the mic to a girl on the left side front row and he
gushed on how she loved him ect. then he made the comment on how he needed to find a lovely
voice which is when I locked eyes with him and made a motion to give me the mic and HE

DID! I took the mic and I said, "Moz.." he said "yes?" and I asked, "Hows the Baby?" haha I
thought it to be a clever funny thing to say. The audience laughed and he said, "Why do you
laugh when asking about my baby? I take my baby very seriously." Then he gave the mic to
another gal just to the right of me and she said something like "I'm just shaking in your
presence" something like that and Morrissey said something in reply like to take some kind
of medication for it. haha Morrissey always has the best comebacks. I love it.

Later in the show I made a poem for Morrissey on the back of a postcard of a Native American
man because I live on the reservation I am part Sioux Indian and well anyhow I handed him my
postcard during one of the songs and he almost didn't take it but saw it last minute and put his
hand out behind his back and snatched it from me and tucked it away in his back pocket. So
for the rest of the show my postcard remained on Morrisseys BUTT!! YAY!! haha
{My poem I wrote for him on the postcard went:
CD computer cassette rewind fast-forward
forget
concert one I was so close to you
concert two I needed even more
concert three was such a bore
because the stage was high up off the floor
concert four I drove galore
now we are on concert five and I'm glad your still alive.}
My brother said I should of recited that over the mic but I like the whole ""hows the baby bit"
haha.
I think for this show my favorite songs he did were: Seasick But Still Docked because this
song is just truly amazing and the lyrics make me tear up every time! Ask because that is one
of the songs that got me hooked on The Smiths actually the whole Queen is Dead album really
did it for me. I also enjoyed Sorry Doesn't Help Us that song along with Something Is
Squeezing my Skull those two are my favorites on the new album besides Its Not Your
Birthday Anymore but he didn't do that live :( Does anyone else think Something Is Squeezing
my Skull sounds like a Smoking Popes song? I do.

Well at the encore of First of The Gang to Die I started something I couldn't finish....I tried to
get onstage but I just couldn't boost myself up fast enough and I got knocked back by lurch
and after my attempt it went to complete mayhem! and a that lurch guard did a football tackle
to a guy and landed off the stage on the floor completely on their backs others got shoved off
and finally it settled down and a guy next to us lost his glasses but retrieved them shortly there
after. Morrissey looked a bit concerned and security was very tight so unfortunately I did not
make it on stage. :( But I believe my Morrissey experience was just as good without it.

I got Jessie's guitar pick that reads Mexi Can. We then made our way to the merchandise
stand and I wanted to get a signed LP but alas just as I was going to ask for one another dude
jumped in and got the last one but I did ask him if I could get a picture with it and he was a
nice guy of whom we had chatted with and he let me he had come from Vancouver Canada for
the show!
After the show me and my brother headed over to 7th street entry for the after party. It was
such a fun time as we walked in the song What Difference Does It Make was blaring over the
speakers and Morrissey fans are the best and most fun people to party with. Darin and I made
our way to the dance floor right when James, "Laid" came on and I was ecstatic I love that
song!! Other songs played were: Pulp-common people, Jesus and Mary Chain-Head On,
Edwyn Collins-A Girl Like You, New Order, Panic-The Smiths, Hairdresser On Fire-Moz,
The Cure-Just Like Heaven, Irish Blood English Heart-Moz, ect....I even danced with a fellow
that looked like the character SPUD from the movie Trainspotting he seriously was that guys
twin it was soooo funny he danced to Pulp's Common People with me.

After that we headed back to the hotel and passed out! haha What a fun day!! I am very lucky. Stay tuned to my youtube.com page: http://www.youtube.com/sirenluvluv [youtube.com] I will be posting video there later tonight!!
