"I'm never going to let your negative vibes and comments get through to my psyche and cripple me..." Hello, I'm SarahG, normally odd yet oddly normal. I've been shifting gears all of my life, but I'm still a country mile behind the world.

Hello!

Quite a momentous occasion, this. It's my first ever journal entry for morrissey-solo.com! I'm new to this, so please be gentle with me!

I'm actually relatively new to being a Morrissey fan, I've only been one for two years. This wasn't my fault though-I wasn't even born when The Smiths split up and no-one thought to alert me to their existence. Plus, while I was unwittingly wishing for someone like Moz to worship he was still in LA with nothing new being released. I didn't know anything about The Smiths until I saw their "Singles" collection in a shop. My Dad went "Oh, The Smiths, you'll like them!" I wasn't sure- the picture on the front, and the orange writing ... However, I took his word for it and paid my £4.99, and my life was never the same again! That voice, saying the things I'd been needing someone to say for so long! Who was the man with the quiff and brown cardigan who understood? He's the only artist who makes you want to follow him to the ends of the earth.

Well, that's my testimony! I sometimes feel very insignificant compared to all of you who've been fans since the very earliest days of The Smiths and have literally followed him around the world. Some of you have actually met him, and had conversations with him; the stories you must have to tell...

I'm hoping all my stories are still to come! And even if they don't, even if I remain here in my humdrum existence with nothing of any note to tell to my grandchildren, well...I'll still have had the experience of being a fan and right now that's pretty good! I love the new single and I'm apoplectic with excitement about the new album and tour!

Thanks for being so welcoming! I promise, my next entry will be slightly more interesting!

It doesn't matter at all whether you've been a fan 'for years' or not . . . not at all. Devotion, well, it's devotion in any language and at any point on the chronological scale. Insignificant? Aaah, but no. Just another thing emanating from Morrissey that transcends and that saves.

(There is, however, very much such a thing as having been born in the wrong era. A country mile behind, I should have been carted off with tuberculosis from a damp singlet in 1837).

. . . But really - thankyou for writing about how you first heard Morrissey: I always smile to read things like that. As for me, I accidentally found a recording of Spring Heeled Jim in the attic . . . and I went out the same day and bought all I could find - which admittedly wasn't a great deal - A decent record shop would be like a new science in my town.

Doesn't matter when you found Morrissey-just that you did.......

I first discovered The Smiths via John Peel's radio shows and subsequent sessions. Amazing time although the old "A" Level's suffered a bit as a result!! My dad used to curse Morrissey whilst my mum would be doing the ironing singing THIS CHARMING MAN!!

Like you I am new to this site. A bit of a baptism of fire at first hey? Finding my feet (and my way round) a bit now.

Looking forward to reading your journals and comments.

I do have to admit I did know about Morrissey way back in the mid 80's but I was so busy being a momma that he only slightly said a few sweet words in my ear:)
But then, when I heard him again in the 90's and I had more time, I have to admit that it was the best thing that happened to me ..
You know what, things have a way to coming to us when we most need it.
I sure hope our vibes bring you to hope and live a life of happiness and not distructive for many of us have thought and confused many things..

I have noticed that most people that love Morrissey's music are very Fine Intellectual people...
Very Opened minded and this is somthing that I like.
Just be careful there is an evil streak.. Especially in Morrissey solo chatroom ;)..

            So Take the Loop Sarah!

Ach, I'm a recent fan too- was also born after 'the split'!

My revelation came through '...Quarry'. Heard the singles, liked them, bought the album, and my stepdad told me that this wonderful man 'Morrissey' had been in a band called 'The Smiths'. He gave me a tape. Then went out and bought 'Meat is murder' first. It's actually my favourite, so a good choice for a first purchase!

Damn, I am hoping so hard for some stories to tell! But the thing is, if I ever met Morrissey I would not know what to say. I sit around all day just thinking how I would play it...probably try not to be clearly obsessive, but throw in a few comments that somehow show my adoration (calmly!). Failing that, I could just splutter 'I-I-I...I love you!' and burst into tears, hug him and probably smear tears and snot all over him. Maybe that way he'd remember me when he's getting his suit dry-cleaned, at least.

Reading the comments about being born in the wrong era, I too regret this and am constantly reproaching my mother for having been around to witness The Smiths and yet completely ignoring them, and pretty much detesting them now. However, I did watch 'The most embarrassing moments of the 80's' the other night, and it did make me almost glad that I wasn't around then. Obviously, Thatcher and all that was bad, but...some of the fashion! Ugh! Lycra shorts that show everything? No thanks.
