Worshipped by the Aztecs, me . . . and you, it would seem. (Quite) interestingly, they were renowned by the Aztecs for having aphrodisiac properties, and accordingly avocados were called 'ahuacatl', meaning 'testicle'. However, the visiting Spanish couldn't quite pronounce this, and failing to recognise either that the fruit even had any sort of mystical property or that they were named after a part of the male anatomy, gradually corrupted the name to 'aguacato', meaning nothing in particular. Hence, avocados are cursed to ever remain testicles badly pronounced in Aztec.

Nevertheless, this is what I am most often to be found buying . . . and they're very nice on toast.
