I'm not the man you think I am...I am a poor freezingly cold soul...I have just discovered that prudence never pays. Now, we must wait for the right time

On behalf of the journalists in Morrissey-solo land, I would like to complile mini-match reports on the greatest sporting event on earth, the World Cup! So, bringing you action from the first game, is JacquesTheLad.

FRANCE 0 SENEGAL 1 by JacquesTheLad

With the co-host nation, South Korea, putting on a colourful and delightful display in Seoul to officially open the 2002 World Cup, European and World Champions France started the tournament against a largely unfancied Senegal team, all of whom's players plied their trade in French football, and who took Cameroon to penalties in the African Nations Cup.

The match begun at a very low-tempo, with little in the way of chanced being created. However, that was soon to change as Senegal broke free down the right, with French captain Marcel Desailly left stranded by lone front man El Hadji Diouf, who cut back for Fadiga who shot tamely into the grateful arms of Fabien Barthez. This seemed to put a spark into the French, who started to create. Juventus' David Trezeguet came closest, striking the post with a ferocious strike, with the keeper beaten.

Still, the French didn't have a total grip on the match, and this was confirmed on the half-hour mark when danger man El Hadji Diouf skinned Frank Lebeouf down the left, before squaring a tempting ball into the box. As Emmanuel Petit tried to put the ball behind for a corner, the ball ricocheted back off Barthez into the path of Papa Bouba Diop, who scrambled the ball into an empty net. One of the biggest upsets of the World Cup was being made, as Senegal led the world champions into half time!

The second half should have seen more urgency from the French, but although they packed the Senegal box almost at leisure, there was little in the way of clear-cut chances as Senegal defended resolutely. Indeed, they could have buried the game through Fadiga, who smashed a shot from an acute angle against the crossbar with Barthez beaten. Shortly after, Arsenal's Theirry Henry looped the ball over the Senegal keeper Sylva, only to see it crash agonisingly against the crossbar.

Senegal held out successfully, and France became the first world champions to lose their first game since Argentina were defeated by Cameroon in the opening game of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. It was a dream come true for Senegal, whilst France must get their act together if they want to qualify. Uruguay next for France, in a match they simply have to win.

And in other news...

I'm going to go to the party tomorrow night, having finally convinced one of my friends to go with me. I shouldn't imagine that I stay long though...But I certainly hope to have a good time. No doubt the friend will call up and tell me something's came up, but it sounds promising for just now! And the party on Saturday is still on as well, so we sound in relatively good shape for the weekend!

And, apart from that, I'm still listening to "Kill Uncle"...Isn't life strange at times?

Anyway, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get on before the party tomorrow night, so if I don't, then have a good weekend folks. And enjoy the World Cup!!!
