I'm not the man you think I am...I am a poor freezingly cold soul...I have just discovered that prudence never pays. Now, we must wait for the right time

There speaks a true friend

05:13 PM

I managed to outfox and amaze BWTT this evening with the revelation of the longevity of Outkast's "Hey Ya" in the UK Top 40. What a song! I don't like "black" music, as a lot of you know (and despise me for), but "Hey Ya" truly is a great song - an early contender for song of 2004. I bought it today, and it's my first non-Morrissey single purchase since my double David Bowie with Queen ("Under Pressure") and John Lennon ("Imagine") purchases of December 1999. I bought a single!

The above fact is probably appropriate, given the (in)significance of the day. I love Valentine's Day - it gives me the opportunity to take stock of my life, and analyse how incomplete it is. Or simply boring. I'm the first to acknowledge that I'm hardly the life and soul of my bedroom, never mind harbouring great influence in the lives of others. But I really don't mind - my self-torment is what spurs me on to wake up each morning. I love contending with it.

Solitude is the way forward. I know; I've been there.

Interesting you don't like what you term "black music". By that do you mean all music recorded by said "blacks" or just music evolved in recent history attributed to blacks like hip-hop, R&B, or even older genres like jazz, gospel, and the blues?

I ask this cause if you don't like black music then I wonder how you can truly appreciate the music of Moz. As a fan, I am sure you are aware of the influence of Elvis Aaron Presley on Moz on many levels, including his vocal stylings -inflections and nuances which were heavily borrowed from, if not blatantly ripped off of black American R&B artists of the early 1950's who at that time were not nearly as marketable. Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records - the 1st label that signed Presley - actually was looking for a white vocalist that could sing "black" when he stumbled upon Elvis.

My point - before making such a sweeping statement as "I don't like black music", perhaps you should really think about the factual history and how that applies to the artists you admire. Does it mean you don't like the music blacks make - cause if it weren't for said music Moz wouldn't have his trademark singing style I am sorry to say. Or, if you don't like music whites make influenced by blacks then you still wouldn't like Moz it seems.

This isn't meant as some "you're a racist!!" cry -I strive to be anti-reactionary and I would like to think I have evolved in that vein quite well. What's more, I enjoy reading your journal - you're one of the few really interesting people on here. My intention here is to present an alternative perspective that addresses the issue of race, which you brought up, in effort to better understand where you're coming from.

    thx,
    toni

Oh yeah, I find it slightly amusing that so many people, particularly whites, are discovering Outkast with this "Hey Ya" song - and that you term the cross-over hit as "black" music when that's the most "non-black" sounding song they've ever done (in my humble black opinion). I guess that having been a fan of theirs the last nine years, from their debut 'til now, gives me a slightly different perspective though.

  • "Heya" is a class song. Very danceable, and I LOVE the fashion the people in the crowd wear in the video. I hate it how"MOD" became a fashion now,I
ve been into it for years.
And YES,I'm back on here, big deal,I've disbaled the comment's on my journal. I would like to maybe mend fences with you, your not so much of a cold hearted twat as I think you are,I think deep down you can be almost nice?
