Firstly, Nick, let me agree that perhaps a chain of posts is hardly the best method of communication--my heading "keep your mouth shut" was hardly aimed at YOU (if I'm out to be rude, it'll be slightly less clumsy), rather my interpretation of YOUR sentiment when it came to the folks in question expressing their anger (i.e. if you don't like being "bashed", hightail it out of town). Perhaps I wasn't able to follow the posts carefully enough to read your subtle sarcastic shadings...but I nevertheless came to a particular conclusion, enough of one to fire off what I see now is a pretty vitriolic response (in truth, fueled in part by not a few drinks at the local). I do think, though, that for those who simply settle at "we agree to disagree" it's important to realize that that still amounts to a negation not of someone else's opinion but of that person's very existence, loves, affections, etc. and I can't exactly blame some of our more hot-headed friends for lashing out. Honestly, I can do without the dense critical theory and gender studies--it doesn't need to be half as complicated. It amounts to respect, which is more than just a certain brusque tolerance or indifference--more like real acceptance. Heaven knows it's taken Our Hero years to accept himself.
