Evidence that Morrissey's fascination with Mexico/Mexicans is just a joke:

"I like to drive around the small, rundown Mexican parts of Los Angeles where the small, rundown Mexicans live"--interview in The Times (see news archive on this website, November). This is a very insulting comment.

"Me-hi-co, Me-hi-co, Me-hi-co! Life is very strange. Life is very strange. Life is very strange" comments during the Irvine show. He is saying that he can't believe or understand why Mexicans like him. Thus, he has not accepted these fans yet.

"Me-hi-co! But you don't live there, you live here!" Morrissey at the Ventura show, December '99. Wondering why Mexicans are so proud of their mexican "heritage" but live in the U.S. If Mexico is so great, why don't you move there?

There is a very decided factor of Englishness is everything Morrissey does. As an American, many of his references and sometimes his conventions of language are lost on me. In order to fully appreciate Morrissey you have to appreciate these things. So it requires some research occasionally. So how is this Englishness appreciated by Mexican Morrissey fans? I don't know, just asking.
