Milan, Italy (Nov. 2, 1999)

Morrissey at Alcatraz

It was worth the 5 hr trip to Milan. Although we reserved tickets about 4 weeks ago there were still plenty of tickets for sale up to ten past nine when the man came on stage. The venue was well filled however and the mostly male bespectacled audience (slight exaggeration) was noisily appreciative of all the offerings which started with a perfectly rendered (to my ears at least) 'you're gonna need someone on your side' followed by - Alma Matters - Boy racer - Hairdresser on fire - Billy Budd and Speedway (regrettably missing the loud bassy drums). But at the end there seemed to be dissatisfaction even on stage with the sound quality and at the end of the 65 minute set Morrissey and the band left the stage to muted appluase which quickly evaporated into silence. I was quite worried he wouldn't do an encore - to a silent audience I've never seen - but he came back wearing a black tea shirt, 'Milano take me home' he said and thrilled everyone with an old Smiths anthem - reminds me I have to get the music store to take care of the holes in my collection.
Ciao - enjoy Modena tonight you lucky folks!
