Chicago - A Unique Souvenir
submitted by Alison Olcott

Sept. 28, 1997

I thought other people might be interested in my unique tour souvenir, one that was only at last night’s Chicago show (although there were probably slightly different ones at the 1st Chicago show, too) For the second show I was first in line, having shown up at 10. That evening, when there were tentative preparations to let us in, I was talking to the security guard at the door, or, to be more exact, he was mocking me for being there so early. Then later, during the gap between Elcka and Morrissey, he came back out and was standing in front of me. All of a sudden, he said "would you like a souvenir of tonight?" and handed me the security protocol and instructions for the show, a little pamphlet that had rules of guard conduct, incident reports, and a Morrissey biography, as follows:

MORRISSEY

JAM Productions and Q101 present Morrissey in concert tonight at the Riviera Theater. As vocalist and lyricist for seminal 80’s alternatives The Smiths, Morrissey established himself as [italics] the post-punk poet laureate through his unusual, topically timely, and literate song writing. He and guitarist Johnny Marr created a sensitive and dramatic music which, though coming from completely outside popular music channels and eschewing the more superficial trendiness of the day, struck quite a responsive chord among (initially British) teenagers and young adults, elevating Morrissey and Co. to the status of true music heroes.

Morrissey began an even more commercially successful solo career in 1987, now known and respected internationally, and continues to put out music which remains undeniably unique in an ever more diverse and crowded pop field. He brings his singular vision to a sold-out Riviera tonight. Elcka open.

Anywho, there it is. My one of a kind, one-night only Morrissey memento.
