But I’m not sure of the exact order of these songs. There was no “Late Night, Maudlin Street”, (nor “Mexico”).

The crowd was fairly quiet and not large, but Morrissey was talkative and seemed very relaxed. He wore the usual cargo-type trousers and a black shirt.

“Hand and Glove” was brilliant. The band played it very well, and Morrissey sang it like he did in the 80s. I believe it is 16 years since he last performed it live, so it was a wonderful surprise. Actually when he did his soundcheck in the afternoon he played it twice, and the band played it once more without him. The band also sound-checked what sounded like “Reader Meet Author”, but without Morrissey.

On the way into the soundcheck Morrissey came and talked to his fans waiting outside, which was very nice. He seemed very shy, but chatted for just a few minutes and a number of us had our photo taken with him. Quite a thrill!

The gong had a sign stuck on it, saying “I want Lyon that I can’t have”, and Morrissey made a lot of jokes in translating the titles of the songs, for example, introducing “Hairdresser on Fire” as “Coiffure en Flame” or something. Another song was introduced as “Pomme, Pomme, Pomme which means Apple, Apple, Apple”, which was a bit strange. He introduced “Meat is Murder” saying it was as song about “Charcutiers”. But, unlike the Paris concert he didn’t use “Bonsoir” or “Merci” so much.

Only two people made it onto the stage, and I was one of them!

"Hand In Glove" is too much of a Smiths classic. He should not have performed that particular song, on this night. I'm actually quite sad, that he has chosen to do so. It should have been left, in the past.

Just a few personal ramblings to add. Gig was excellent, Himself and the band might have been a tiny bit tired to start with but by the third song sound was impeccable. Great performance, the man has class, great band, superb interpretation of the Smiths numbers and Morrissey's classics, new songs are so good that they have to be released somehow otherwise do check them on the Janice Long radio programme. He laughed a lot and joked between songs and that was brillant. His interpretation all along was superb and at times intense. Crowd was quiet (but then this is Lyon and this is to be expected) but all the more devoted.

Now for the quotations (this is very roughly jotted down as it comes back to me)
- He introduce the band saying that he'd like to introduce the New York Dolls ...
- Greeted us people of Lyon and advise us "never to move to Paris".
- Right before There is a Light: "Whathever you do or say never forget Oscar Wilde"
- Someone ask him whether they would be playing in Belgium and he laughed saying that he had no plan for Belgium whatsoever and that no one had any plans for Belgium
- He mentioned to have a bit of a Swedish sniffle
- He took a letter handed by someone up front, ask whether he could read it in public, than stuck it in his trousers' pocket saying that only exciting letters should be read in public.
He stated to have lots of enemies. Someone mentioned Elton John (obviously as a reference to the Janice Long interview) and he laughed amazed I suppose that French fans heard about it. Was that you Bryce ?
- Made the usual reference to Julia who "swam from Stockholm"
- Was happy to see the "irregular regulars"
- Was wearing the same shirt as the purple one in the "cardigan affair" but in black.
- Change in a white diagonally stripped shirt (I am not sure this is clear, so excuse my French) for the encore, ripped it and threw it to the crowd
- Before leaving, the band applauded the audience and bowed which I personally found sweet.
- He laughed a lot, made jokes and that was brillant.
- Made some comment as to having put on weight
- Touch his quiff nearly constantly and made a joke as to batS flying from it everytime he did so, said that it was a French joke and we could not understand it. To which the audience disagreed.
- Moved his hands to his chest a lot during songs, gently hitting it or so it looked from where I was standing.

Will come back if anything comes to mind.

This was an utterly brillant show and one of those moments near to pure sheer happiness.

Something else that made the Lyon concert special was that two fans were given permission by Morrissey’s crew to bring in cameras. They were both allowed in front of the barricades for the first three songs, after which they had to take photos from in the crowd. One of them had very good equipment, and I think she took about 400 shots! I believe the best will be put on this site. And of course people made recordings of the concert, so I expect “Hand in Glove by Morrissey” will soon be available online. It was incredible to hear this song live. I know it’s probably a terrible cliché, but the song just seemed to fit Morrissey and the band in 2002 like a hand in glove. It could have sounded awkward, but it didn’t. I don’t think any Smiths songs are so sacred that Morrissey shouldn’t be allowed to perform them – they are his songs. One person at the concert suggested that if Morrissey performs Hand in Glove as the last song at Brixton this could be taken as a signal from Morrissey that this is the swansong of his live career – just as it was in 1986. Let’s hope not.

I also bought two bootleg CDs in Lyon – “A Child Ill” (London) and “He Speaks French!” (Paris) – and both of these are excellent quality. Is it just me, or do the 2002 performances sound far superior to Beethoven was Deaf?

Interestingly, the security at the Lyon concert was fairly relaxed. Before the concert I let the head of security know that I planned to get on stage very briefly for the first chorus of There is a Light. When it came to the time, no one stopped me jumping up from the barrier to the stage. So, good luck for anyone trying to make the stage for the rest of the tour.

I'm truely amazed the band achieved to play a decent version of Hand In Glove. Really. I once said on this site that it would take like a couple of lives for Alain and Boz to learn this soung and perform it like Johnny Marr would and I still believe it !
On the other hand, they are 2 guitar players, so it makes 4 hands instead of Johnny Marr's couple of magic toys. Hmm. It's hard to tell so please, anyone, upload a bootleg of it, I'm craving to hear it !
The owner of this site might know it better but is there any chance that the band actually read us and fullfilled our wishes by taking late night guitar lessons ?
Is there any chance that our modest web contributions actually stung their musician pride and pulled them into higher musical ambitions ?

Yesterday was special for me, I saw Morrissey on stage for the first time... It's true I was upset to hear him perform Hand in Glove, and so was I hearing the first chords of I Want the One I Can't Have at the very beggining of the gig !!!

Morrissey was dressed in black, shaking hands, talking and joking with the audience between songs, on a quite small stage. Audience was especially 30 years old Smiths fans, quite calm and "disciplinated" (not so usual in France !). Morrissey told us (joking or not ?) " Don't ever ever move to Paris". This was curious since he is supposed to play in Paris tonight (maybe a bad souvenir from last gig ?). Anyway he is right I never, never wanna move to Paris !

During "Hairdresser..." it seems he changed some lyrics saying for instance "Some say London, home of the brash" instead of "Here in London..." Well at last it is what I understood... And also "I am remarkably dressed" instead of "you..." I am sure of this !!!
New songs were greatly performed in my opinion, especially "Irish blood English heart" and during this song some people in the first rows were waving a big Union Jack with "The Queen is Dead" written on it (but Moz did not take it !).

He also told us a funny joke about our "Belgian cousins" as we say in France, "Does anyone have plans for Belgium ? I don't know... maybe Saddam". Once again it is what I understood but I have to say that I did not smoke anything during the gig. Well this probably won't "please the press in Belgium"...

He also received a few letters but he did not read any. No flowers, which surprised me indeed. He also told us he had a lot of enemys before performing "The First of the Gang to Die" and admitted that he has an "overweighted body"... Maybe the reason why he did not sing "The last of the famous..."

We only can regret that the band was sometimes playing a little bit too loud, in my opinion. I will just had that he torn his shirt at the end of "There is a Light..." and threw the parts to some lucky ones in the first rows...

The actual setlist was better than the one played on the west coast leg...I'd have killed to listen Hand in Glove from the Man, in concert. Instead of the lame 'Mexico' or even 'Meat is Murder' which is a beautiful song that sounds great only on the studio version.
