Sun: Morrissey wades into Falklands row

I'm on tour and I want to say something contraversial to get attention. It's pathetic. Dread to think what pronouncements will arrive once his autobiography is out.....

Of course, it is also possible he has one eye on the NME case, and is making rather curious anti-Brit statements to undermine the contention of the once great kids' comic that he is a proto-fascist.

Neither country knew anything about the oil potential in 1982. The UK was defending it's citizens from invasion; there's no greater reason than that.

The North Sea oil fields were fully mapped in 1982 and the British oil industry was on the leading edge of exploration, the potential for hydrocarbons around these South Atlantic islands was almost certainly established in 1982. The Argentine government could hardly have failed to be aware of the possibility.

'Large oil deposits also almost certainly exist in the waters around the Falklands and although in the 1980s it was difficult to locate them and uneconomic to extract them, technology is now making this feasible. It will never be known but is possible that the British knew about the long tem oil prospects when they made their decision to go to war.'

As for there being 'no greater reason' than the UK defending its' citizens, you are being disingenuous at best: Margaret Thatcher cynically exploited the exploitation of the Argentine public by the junta of Galtieri. Assuming all Argentinians agree with the Malvinas narrative is as silly as assuming that all British citizens agree with the Falklands narrative.

Apart from the 23 people who live on these islands, who gives a flying f***? Poofs, skin heads, Northern Irish catholics, now South Americans... he'll align himself with any "outside" group. His views have never changed politics (but then, why should they, they're meant to increase ticket/album sales) so who cares what he says. He'll have joined UKIP and be running for PM by 2016. And you'll all still be waiting for the autobiography and "new" album.
Sad losers.

Japan is as close to China as the Falklands are to Argentina. Will he tell his Japanese fans that they should all be Communists?

NO BABY IS A MATTER OF GEOGRAPHY
'Rio Grande is the largest city next to the Islands, and Argentina the closest nation. Within a radius of 800 kilometers (500 miles) Stanley (Stanley) find nothing but water and Argentine mainland and island.
"The Malvinas Islands belong geographically to the South American continent, and for this reason are a natural part of Argentine territorial domain, whose proximity they are."

anyway....you won't accept it...is ok...you still have a QUEEN!!!! (and it's not the rock band)

is the falkland islands a piece of land or a community of people? don't the people that actually live there want to remain part of england? surely they are the only ones who should have a legitimate say over this topic? not random people who know little about it and don't live there.

Being a veteran of the Falklands War, I totally agree, it is for the BRITISH FALKLAND ISLANDERS who have the final dessision and believe me, they want to remain British. Why do morons like this Morrisey bloke try to come out with some stupid remark as he has done without getting the facts correct. MORRISEY, IF YOU HAVE A PAIR, COME BACK TO BLIGHTY AND MENTION THIS TO THE GUYS WHO WENT AND FOUGHT TO KEEP BRITISH SUBJECTS BRITISH. YOU AIN'T WELCOME BACK HERE YOU CRETIN !

Who are you purporting to quote, here?

You first invaded the Malvinas Islands in 1833, In 1806 and 1807 you wanted to invaded Buenos Aires and you could not.... This is Colonialism and excessive force...

I'm sure Argentina was not a recognised independent country before 1856, and you're all Spaniards anyway (taken over another country by force) it is not for you to comment, I fought to keep the British Falkland Islanders British, they are the ones to decide, nt an Argy government, wind you neck Juan.

"Under the 9th EDF, € 4,547 million (i.e. the 9th EDF territorial allocation of € 3 million + transfers from decommitted funds for an amount of € 0.047 million) and € 1.500 million from the MTR) is allocated to the Falkland Islands by means of a single programming document (SPD). The SPD identifies capacity building in the area of trade development with a view to encourage trade growth and increased value added in the Falklands Islands main production sectors of fisheries, agriculture and tourism as focal sectors.

Under the 10th EDF Falklands islands will receive 4.6 million euros."

Unbelievable.

What complete and utter bollocks. By that standard Argentina can claim sovereignty of Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile and possibly a few more countries. Claiming that being close to somewhere gives you a claim to occupy it has to be the stupidest argument I've heard in a long time.

Pathetic.

Morrissey sing, that's what your good for, leave the rest to those who know!!!

The UN is clear, both Argentina and The UK must sit and talk diplomaticly about this mattters, Malvinas are part of the continental platform of Argentina ( wich means that they are a part of its territory), but the people living there claim to be British. Every country must obbey the UN. In 1833 there was no UN and UK was a colonialist empire, in 1982 The government of Argentina was ocuppied by a bloody dictatorship. These are different times, we can say whatever we want, but we must say it face to face in the UN, respecting the law...and more importantly, in peace.

Ha! Major media movers-and-shakers there. Guardian = hippy wankers. Belfast Telegraph = only bought by unemployed people on Thursdays looking for a job. Independent = more hippies. Sky = it's their homepage, they don't even look at it before going to pornhub. Spinner = never heard of it.
