Hideous trait.

What do you think of this? The image reminds me very much of some Linder Sterling work I've seen. I find it interesting also that the photographer is a man.

I was once talking with a female Saudi Arabian pediatrician who told me a story. She was on the maternity ward, seeing to a patient. All the new mothers were sitting around nursing their babies, no scarves on as the room only held women. A male doctor walked into the room, and the women all rushed to cover... their hair. Not their breasts.

To me, this seems perverted, they shouldn't have to worry about covering perfectly innocent hair, or a perfectly innocent breast, being used as intended. (Do I sound like Chica? I miss her.)

The difference is that to certain Muslim ladies, revealing their hair isn't innocent. It's all relative. Uncovering the top of the head and long, thick hair can be viewed as being an attraction to men. Whereas the breast is providing a function i.e. feeding the child.

I understand that, that's the problem. It's all built on the rationale that men are unable to control themselves, and they need to be protected from temptation. This provides them a perfect excuse should they force a woman into any sexual act she didn't want to participate in. And I wouldn't mind if this were just a very old custom that lingers for tradition's sake, but it isn't. I've met people who truly believe these things, it's so hard for me to accept that level of inequality, because I am a spoiled American girl.
