Don't know that much about Cromwell but I know he led the English Civil War in the 1640s and became Lord Protector in the aftermath of the King's execution. He also led the English in an assault against Ireland in the 1650s which was mainly over religion and to make money from Irish land.

Somehow he has gained the reputation as a great man (as demonstrated in the Great Britons poll last year)and his statue is still outside parliament. I imagine the reason he is mentioned in IBEH is because he led the campaign to conquer Ireland and killed thousands of Irish people yet is still saluted by many who do not know what a complete twat he was.
