Default I'm in NY. Where should I visit?

I'm in NY for Passover at my husband's family's house. (Which is what ended the Moz tour early for me. *shakes fist*) Tomorrow we're going into the city to see what we can see. So... Where should we go? My grandmother-in-law recommends Rockafeller Center, but that's kinda touristy for me. I'd like to see cute/funky shops and eat some kind of foreign food and just look around in a semi-unplanned sort of way.

    Any recommendations?
Yes, I'm posting again, but I still hate you all. Especially you. (Not you... You're a darling.)

Stay off the 7 train. Tomorrow is Mets Opening Day. You will not understand the meaning of the word unless you are on the 7 train as people are going to the game.

Starting on Thursday is the Yankees home opener as well as the series vs Cleveland. Try to avoid the B,D and the 4 lines.

    OK.
    Thanks.

Actually, I'd like to avoid the trains altogether, if at all possible. Am I naive?

You want to pay for cabs and be stuck in commuter traffic be my guest. It all depends on the traffic. All depends on the traffic.

I spent a lot of time in NY. Close to 10 years I think. One of the coolest things I ever did was ride my bike from Greenpoint to Brighton Beach... about 12 miles or so. Just make sure you wear a helmet.

I know it's terribly touristy, but this is just a must-do:

If it's a clear day, you'll have an amazing view of the city.

For random funky finds and the best selection of exotic restaurants, you've got to visit the East Village/Lower East Side. We're all that's left of "Bohemian" Manhattan. You could stop by my place and say "hi":

If I were in New York for one day, I would go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art; their collections are astounding, they have great roof garden, and the museum is in Central Park, which is glorious in the Spring.

There's no reason to avoid the trains, they're still running fairly regularly.

You can skip the meat dishes, but the sides are amazing! I haven't even been in here for about 10 years because I always forget to go everytime I'm in NYC, but I'm sure it's still good... It sorta feels like eating in a prison, but it is SO GOOD.
