In place of the okay but not knock-'em-dead "Hold on to Your Friends," Morrissey released this as the follow-up single to "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get." The lead track from Vauxhall and I, "Now My Heart Is Full" refers to Graham Greene's Brighton Rock characters lyrically; Morrissey's quiet purr at the start turns into one of his best, most soaring performances by the end. Musically, meanwhile, it's an absolute killer, one of his favored glam-in-the-spotlight numbers working note for note to a fine climax. "Moon River," the B-side from the U.K. Hold on to Your Friends EP, surfaces here, as does another track, the live version of "Jack the Ripper," from Beethoven Was Deaf. Though that album was never released in the U.S., this cut, possibly because its original B-side studio incarnation was fairly obscure, became a left-field hit on commercial alternative stations in 1993, resulting in its appearance here. The restrained, threatening mood of the original turns into a fierce performance here, keeping the pace but upping the amps and angst. Morrissey's delivery is flawless, while the screaming guitar motifs that end up dominating the songs are breathtaking, fitting the emotional sucker punch of the song to a T.
