    Default DVD technical question~Please help!

I live in the US and use a laptop running Vista with DVD, would I be able to purchase a Region 2 DVD and play it on my laptop or would I need to buy a dedicated region 2 DVD player?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Not sure about laptops and Vista, but normally you can change the region code of a computer dvd drive only five times, unless you found some "other" solution.

Be sure you know the difference between region codes and the PAL/NTSC problem, because that's something completely different! There are ways to make your standalone dvd player region free, but I don't know if it can play PAL DVDs!

Hi. It's true about changing regions max 5 times on Windows.
But if you use a software called ANYDVD you can play any DVD from every region without changing any Windows settings.

Good point about the PAL/NTSC. You would think the DVD technology would override all of this hassle, but clearly the resolution is still an issue!

    Hi Raquel,

What you need is some software on your laptop called "Region Free DVD". It's the best $40 I ever spent.

    http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm

You need be wary of changing your firmware setting for region decoding. Many only let you change it 5 times as the other posts say. This software bypasses the checking mechanism and it also does cool things like bypassing those non-skippable copyright messages and taking you straight to the table of contents screen :-)

You can use your normal player software and this sits in between that and the DVD drive to do it's thing. It has various settings you can change, but once you've tweaked it then it's invisible to you, apart from the systray applet.

You can try it free of charge at the site.

This really is a superb product and I can't recommend it enough!

    Hope this helps.

PS - I am in the UK and it plays my region 1 NTSC Oye Esteban perfectly! :-)

Or you can download VLC for free, and play DVDs and other audio and video formats.

    That's why God made Google.

    http://www.dvdexploder.com/dvdcodes.htm

I think this is where I got my codes. I have two different DVD players, both the same brand, but different models. The code I found worked on one player, but I couldn't find a code that worked on the newer one, which is also a Blu-Ray player. I haven't looked lately to see if anyone has discovered a working code for that one. It's hit or miss, basically.

    Good luck!
