BLUR
B-SIDES AND UNHEARD SONGS

They were one of the best bands of the 90's. The antithesis to grunge. Artful but sweaty, clean but laddish...beer swilling but gentlemanly. And they wrote some fantatsic songs. I don't know what happened to them after The Great Escape...they got Britpopped out, I suppose...having said that, the self-titled Beck-wank album is actually pretty good if you've had a couple of beers, and follow-up 13 is, as well, if you've had a couple more. Then Graham left and Think tank came out, which I still can't bring myself to listen to. And now Damon is doing that dreadful Gorillaz thing...my my. It's so sad.

Anyway.

Here are 20 of what I consider to be the cream of the crop of Blur's b-sides, sessions, etc. I could probably -no, I could definitely- scrape together another twenty or so good, solid tracks like these from the archives (Blur has an ungodly amount of non-LP songs and alternate versions) but this stuff is the really essential unheard Blur. In my book. And I think I'm qualified.... I spent 78 percent of 1994 in my bedroom, listening to them.

About the songs...

Everything is chronological. Sing is from 1989, pre-leisure, when they were still called Seymour. It is a different version than the one recorded a year later during the Leisure sessions, which later appeared on the Trainspotting soundtrack. Uncle Love and Mr. Briggs are Leisure outtakes. Into Another, Young and Lovely, Long Legged ,and Let's all Go Down The Strand are from the Modern Life sessions, as is Chemical World, presented here in a different mix (possibly a different recording, but I don't think so.)

Park Life is from an acoustic BBC session, and the three tracks that follow it were outtakes from the Park Life album sessions, later issued as B-Sides. (That's Graham as cowboy on rednecks, I believe.) No Monsters In Me through Ultranol are all excellent tunes that escaped The Great Escape. All Your Life and Death Of A Party are circa 1997 (the self-titled project) and All We Want is a B-side from , I believe, No Distance Left To Run.

Closing number Far Out is a 13-era remake of the Park Life song. It is fantastic...if you listen to nothing else in here, listen to this song.

Just realized my bandwidth is shot...probably from the Moz links I have posted elsewhere 'round these parts...Filefreak sucks...but supposedly it reloads every day. I get 250 outgoing megs per 24 hours. So keep trying.

Yeah, there are tons of wonderful Blur songs hidden away on b-sides. A few more really good ones that I don't think you've mentioned include;
 • Tame
 • Peach
 • Threadneedle Street
 • When the cows come home, and Polished Stone
I went to a one-off Blur concert back in 2000 where they only played their b-sides. A wonderful night.

thanks for these Carnation...looking forward to 13.
Are there multi-disc versions of the self-titled release and Think Tank out there to your knowledge?

Think Tank's pretty good. Much better than 13.
Also, the Good Bad Queen album is excellent both musically and lyrically. Not a big fan of 'The Gorillas' but some good songs.
Plus 'Get the Cool Shoe Shine' could be the best single of the 21st century...
