The Smiths mentioned on Ride album

Whilst Moz lolls his days away in the L.A sun, which has sapped his creative juices, why not spend your hard earned money on the new Ride-OX 4"Best Of"album.

One of the few genuinely brilliant guitar bands of the 90s.Not only that but in the sleeve notes there are 4 mentions of Morrissey and The Smiths. All of them are very nice and it seems clear that they credit the Smiths for opening the doors, for bands of their ilk,in gaining entry to the mainstream charts.
On top of all that it is a brilliant album.

No! I must disagree! Violently! Ride are a cack!! Don't waste your money on this tripe unlike you're keen on:

1. Terrible lyrics that slavishly adhere to the painfully restrictive rhyming couplet form, resulting in rhymes that even Lou Reed would back away from.
2. Shoegazing tunes that owe more to noodling with effects pedals than anyway actual creative process.
3. A truly, truly appalling drummer.
4. A singer with a thin, reedy voice which obviously does not suit the high key in which it is forced to go.
5. And they'll all really ugly too.

Buy an Orange Juice album instead.

Ohh poo!. Those first four eps were fantastic. "Like a Daydream" was this wonderful athem for every skinny kid into guitar bands. It was only after the release of the third album that they became complete crap. And how can you say Mark Gardiner was ugly? He and Tim Burgess were very much the indie pin up boys for a while. I can remember that "homo erotic" NME cover. Drummers are like bass players, nobody really cares about them no matter what band.

'Ere you don't want to buy a couple of old Slowdive eps do you?

Re:Ride

Finally, at the bottom of this message board page,
a thread rings true- I am a major fan of both the
Moz and Ride- liking each in a different respect.
I'd kill to get my hands on the new ride box set-
but i hear its only being released in the U.K. These
days im looking for some smiths/moz rarities to burn
a nice cd. Anyways, the guy who said ride sucked
musically, c'mon now-listen to em- the four are like
a finely tuned machine- they dont miss a half-beat.
you think loz colbert cant drum? listen to grasshopper-
i'll mail you the track myself.

Slowdive

But of course, Slowdive morphed into Mojave 3, who are an excellent, melencholic country/folk outfir whose second and third albums ""Out Of Tune" and "Excuse for travellers") are both brilliant.

yes, I'm a big fan of both. I have anything RIDE has to offer. I believe.

Still I do want the box set. Grasshopper is an incredible song. It really gets me. Too bad, that people didn't like Carnival of Light. I loved every minute of it. The only one I didn't go crazy for was the last one..with the gun on it.. can't remember the title right now..

Andy Bell is in Oasis now right? Strange for him to be associated with that group, but I guess he could worse. I thought his songs were great. Other tracks I like are: Today, Howard Hughes, Starlight Motel, Birdman, and Drive Blind.
Really RIDE's b-sides were something better than the album tracks. People shouldn't go mouthing off about things they haven't heard.

I've heard plenty of Ride, thanks - got some of the records. God knows why. I still think they're sewage.

It's not that strange since Andy Bell ran the show in Hurricane #1, and that band tried to copy Oasis to the T. And for whomever keeps referring to Orange Juice, slag off. Orange Juice were a decent band, but you can't put them in the same sentence as Ride. Ride and early Boo Radleys, yes. Orange Juice and Bolshoi, yes. Ride and Orange Juice, no. See how it works? Ride were one of the finest bands to come out of England, and it's a shame they don't get as much recognition as they should.

Orange Juice vs Ride? No contest!

Come off it!!! Did grown men shed tears when Ride split up, as they did with OJ? No. In fact, Ride were embarrassed to announce they'd split because they knew nobody cared!

OJ - great tunes, the wonderful wit of Edwyn Collins - Ride? Shoegazing scene-jumpers who then floundered for an alternative artistic direction when they realised that that scene was dying. They failed. Nobody cared.

Find me ONE band who cites Ride as an influence, and I'll match that with 20 ones who worship Orange Juice. The latter created the blueprint for the alternative / indie sound of the UK in the early 80s. Ride, erm, didn't.

Lawrence the devil's advocate (and largest OJ fan in the Southern hemisphere) names one band who cite Ride as an influence.

.......

Embrace

(he he)

OK, TMF, I'm waiting for those 20 names of OJ influenced bands now.

Re: Orange Juice vs Ride? No contest!

If Hurricane #1 sounds too Oasis, you should realize that Oasis sounds too Beatles. And the Beatles sounded like Presley too. (where does it end)? Certainly the whole Creation Label is cited all the time as an influence. And yes, I have heard Robert Smith from the Cure say that he thought RIDE was great. Doesn't get much better for me.

Best,
