    Default Happy 50th Shane MacGowan

Somehow,he's managed to get to his 50th Birthday tomorrow (well, fingers crossed):

Shane," Smoking, drinking, partying - that's why I've stayed alive as long as I have. And I've got better with age, that's what's meant to happen.
I party my way through life, it's what I like to do. I'm even partying right now, only I'm doing it on my back. Booze is definitely good for your voice - it greases the whistle."

Did he ever expect to reach 50?
"To be honest, I never thought too much about getting to 50," says Shane.
"But if everybody is making bets that you are going to die at 4.30 tomorrow afternoon you just tend to think, 'F*** it, I'm not going to die as long as those f****** are alive.'"

    Bless him

Happy birthday, Mr. Proper-Dental-Care-or-Else Poster Boy. I've been listening to you for nearly as long as I've listened to The Smiffs. It's thanks to you and your music that my first proper beer was a Guinness. I hope that I can see you guys when you come here in March, but I forgot to note the day tickets went on sale, and now I'm probably out of luck. You haven't falled from grace with God yet, Shane, so happy half-century!

The Daily Mail has a story about Shane today, and in it, he claims that his goal next year is to get his teeth "sorted out."

    Shane frink, anyone? *shudders*

Without a doubt, both Shane and Shaun Ryder defy logic as to how they have have survived this far. Long may both of them continue to live and perform.

Happy B-Day to Shane! I knew there was a reason I wore my Pogues t-shirt today.

I'm proud to share not only nationality, but also a birthday with Shane. He is right up there with Ireland's finest writers: Joyce, Yeates, Beckett, Behan. And if you're in any doubt, read the lyrics to And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda...you have a heart of stone if you don't shed a tear to this masterpiece.

Long may you run, Shane. Lean ar aghaidh.

McGowan was born in England, speaks in a thick English accent and attended one of England's top private schools. 'Irishness' is not a genetic condition that can be passed on. His parents are Irish, he was born and bred in England as were most of The Pogues.

The Pogues are/were a joke and McGowan is the worst example of a plastic paddy I have ever seen.

This type of cod 'Irishness' is popular all over the world amongst people who do not live or wish to live in Ireland, but wish to buy into the romantic idea of an Ireland long gone.

Proper NI bands include The Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers and The Sabrejets.

Have you ever considered a career in comedy? You're pretty good--need to polish the delivery a bit more, maybe work on the one-liners, but you definitely have a knack for out-there thinking. If that's not really your thing, then perhaps there's a chemical plant nearby that has a need for human testers.

Not sure why you feel the need to make a personal attack, but anyway MacGowan was born in Kent, England and attended the Westminster private school in London, it's not a secret, look it up.

Looks like your hero is a fraud, doesn't it?

He is such a fraud that on The Pogues page he claims to have been born in Kent, Ireland :> Take a look

What a moron, he was born in Kent, England.

An English born and educated 'Irish' hero :>

I know full well where he's from; I just don't give a flying fuck. He could be Ukrainian, Peruvian, or Japanese for all I care. I myself have nary a drop of Irish blood in my veins, and I'm 12 generations removed from my nearest ancestors in England--thus I am not personally offended by bigoted statements about "plastic paddies;" I'm simply pointing out that you, as an otherwise educated person, are just as bigoted as run-of-the-mill bigots anywhere.

As for Shane being my "hero," nothing could be more laughable. Heroes are people who change the world using their thoughts and actions. Shane, like the man whom this site celebrates, is merely a singer and entertainer, and one whose personal life is hardly one that anybody should try to emulate. Anybody who worships an entertainer as a hero needs his head examined. Come to think of it, that's your profession, isn't it?

Couldn't give a toss, mate. He (and Jem Finer) wrote 'Fairytale of New York'. You didn't.
Even now, in the final hour of my life, I'm falling in love again..

Why am I a bigot? I despise the appropriation of culture, if that makes me a bigot, fine.

Yeah, Kirsty sings in a mock oirish accent as well. Plus it's set in NYC-ker-ching!!!!

It's very much in the tradition of the black and white minstrels.
