Very sad classical music

This might sound odd, but I like sad music, especially of the classical variety. My favorite thusfar is Barber's Adiagio for Strings. Does anyone here have some recommendations for other sad classical music (links would be appreciated, but not necessary)?

Gorecki'sSymphony #3 is sad... and beautiful. Our local classical station has a habit of playing it in the very early morning hours, and I have a habit of leaving the radio on softly while I sleep, so I've often been awakened by these pieces, permeating my dreams and lingering as I wake...

Cod has great knowledge of classical music, hopefully he'd suggest some good stuff.

I don't know much about the genre, but I find Erik Satie's work is beautiful and melanchoric.

Well I do like this department. I would like to start with this link to Ravel's "Pavane For a Dead Princess"

For me this is a walking through and over hardened snow with misty breath and flashes of reflected sunlight - quiet, quiet, beautiful sadness song.

My father finally had to "officially" teach me how to use the LP player on his stereo and lower it to a level that I could reach. I was scratching up his Beatles and Simon and G-funk records, his West Side Story soundtrack, and my mom's Elvis collection by age 5. He decided to put on his classical albums once a week or so and leave me alone in the room to listen. I am forever grateful for that...
so - here is RAVEL.

Try the great British composer Gavin Bryars. Terribly sad, sure, but oh so poignant...! I'll give you some links if you want and I could post one of his albums.

Elgar - Nimrod, from Enigma Variations, conducted by Daniel Barenboim - the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, here. There's the huge swell, the 'coming home' that fills me up. In modern music, Neil Hannon played the same trick in The Certainty Of Chance.

The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Popularly known as the "Moonlight" Sonata.

The pianist Emil Gilels has one of the greatest recordings of this i have ever heard .

Here is a link to his discography

I was going to Mahler but I am changing it to this - Gorecki's Third Symphony
I add it via youtube - the video that happens to be with it is beautiful

I think this is in fact the saddest - the saddest besides Ravel I posted earlier. It must be.

edit... i see Preg thinks so too... I just saw her post above.

anything Rachmaninoff, especially Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini variation #18, Prelude in D, Elegie, and his 2nd and 3rd concertos.

How Sad Are We?

Here is dramaticish sadness... which I don't find as sad as the quiet snowy sadness... oh but there are so many many hues to the emotion... aren't there?

Mozart Requiem Mass in D Minor

here is one bit of it and you can easily see the entire thing on the same channel this one is posted on.

Franz Schubert's Winterreisse (Winter Journey) is absolutely gorgeous. Great poetry set to great music. It's particularly wonderful when it's cold and dreary out, and a grey melancholy has set in. Get a good translation of the text and weep to your heart's content.
