An REM thread for r.e.m. stuff

Few requests for early REM shows.......

January 30th 1981- Tyrones, Athens GA
March 13th 1981- Tyrones, Athens GA
June 25th 1982- I&I Club, Athens GA
July 2nd 1982- The Strand, Athens GA
October 10th 1982- The Pier, North Carolina

Thanks redsock.

Do you have a list of the shows you have? :)
It's a very long list, mostly of shows through the Document tour - and I think I have most of the circulating shows on those tours - then scattered stuff over the last 24 years!! To be honest, I have not listened to the majority of them, though!

As far as shows after they moved off IRS (!), what are the best shows from the 90s and 00s tours, both in terms of performance and sound? (I did get a ton of 2008 shows, though, from Dime.)

I'll post some of Buckhead's requests this week.

You definitely need (excluding 2008s, assuming you have them)

Unplugged 1991
Tourfilm audio (Green tour VHS/DVD)
Orlando 1989
The Dublin boot from '07 (more for the artifact than the sound)
The Blinding Light (2001)
Later with Jools Holland (f***ing amazing, should have been a catalog release)
2001 Black Session
2001 Unplugged
The Megatour (Monster era)
Live 1992 (one-off show, most songs were later released as b-sides to Monster singles)

...I'm sure there are many more essentials, but these spring to mind.

20 Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars)

NOTES: This is a TERRIFIC sounding audience recording of a classic pre-Murmur gig, at the Strand Cabaret in Marietta, GA. It's one of the best AUD recordings I've ever heard - at first I thought it was a soundboard recording but you can hear too much audience chatter for that to be the case. Either way, it's a phenomenal gig, and it is from a very critical part of the band's career - many of the songs that would end up on "Murmur" were written during this time, and you can hear the differences pretty clearly here. "Perfect Circle" is debuted here and played with a drum machine - this is why it was dropped from the live set shortly after summer 1982 until the Green tour, when they could do it justice.

Notes:

From an interview by David Fricke with Peter Buck on 15 November 1990 taken from The Rolling Stone Files book (pg. 114): "Minneapolis was very good to us from the beginning. We played to twenty people on Thanksgiving 1981, and every one of them came up to us afterwards and invited us to their house for a party".

As if Skank wasn't an unusual song already, on this occasion Stipe's lyric consisted solely of the phrase 'The opposite of plethora is dearth' for the entire song.

Thank you for this.

Now that there are no studio albums to look forward to, I'm trying to build my modest live recording collection.

Here’s another David Thomas recording ... It’s the best quality show I’ve heard from the Pageant tour. I’d give it an A-.

The show has an interesting start, with equipment and/or monitor problems derailing things seconds into the first song. Although this incident seems destined to launch the band into a show similar to the Toronto show the previous year, things do not get that exciting. The set is tight and well played, but they seem unable to bring it to the next level.
Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs guests during many of the encores, but I think the show falls apart when she appears, and her intrusive, off-key wailing on So. Central Rain ruins the song.

I'm desperately looking for the 1998 Spanish TV Show 'Séptimo de Caballería' in audio (specially) or video format. That was recorded in Madrid, Los Álamos during the Up Promo Tour:

Can someone help please?
