Default I havent figured it out.

I was watching some Behind the music type show the other day and this guy, who was in some band or something (It was on in the backround) said something along the lines of "The decades of Rock and Roll and Punk and Glam were amazing becasue veryone was outdoing each other everyone was trying to shock people...nowadays..people are just unshockable"....(Oh, I just remembered it was the lead singer of The Tubes)..So anyway, I got to thinking,,,,Aside from Marylin Manson, I havent been SHOCKED by a band in AGES! I mean...Its really all been done before..So if people are unshockable...what is next? what does a society of unshockable people do? Look for the next best thing? Shoot up their schools?....Life sucks.

Maybey....Its not so much that the world is unshockable, just old people are. (Im 26..and Im guessing that its old at this point)...but
    ...

OK..I have formed a question. The question is this...

If our society is completely unshockable...and the movies and rockstars and gunman are now geared to younger viewers, Britney is running around half naked, Christina needs to be rubbed the right way, the powers that be have to take their money becasue the young are STILL shockable...after a while, wont the young be unshockable? Next they will be killing babies? What happens when Noone at all is schockable. And we are all just jaded @#!!!s? And there is nothing to be seen becasue we have allready seen it?

Will we be so bored that human emotion may come back into importance?

i havent eaten in two days. I realise this doesnt make much sence. Sorry to vomit my thoughts. I am organising.

The problem is, there are still shocking subjects, in the way that homosexuality (even pretend) was once shocking, but limited ways of exploiting these in music.

Paedophilia could shock people, but few, I think, will follow Gary Glitter's lead.

Terrorism can shock people. But just talking about it isn't enough, cos it sounds like old-style rock 'n' roll moronic revolution waffle. A band could shock by actually blowing people up, but then they wouldn't get to release a second album.

Extreme right wing opinions can shock, but it doesn't really work. It comes across as laughable.

I dunno. I'm stuck for more shocking themes. Shock yourself.

    Default Jane Says: "Nothing's Shocking"

    Every generation goes through something...

Wars, Depressions, Sexual Revolutions, Culture Shocks- everything goes in cycles throughout history - and we are doomed to relive our past. The 80's are coming back in fashion again...

We all lost our innocence- and the new kids will as well - he difference is that the Information Age has sped it up a bit...

    Interesting commentary.

To feel 'Shock in Music' is indeed passe, and has all been done before and will be done again and again... I find the more sinister artists more 'shocking' but in a different way.. i.e. Courtney Loves motives against someone like Marilyn Mansun? At least Mansun (and people like Eminem) are playing the system for 'laughs'.. I don't take them seriously, but appreciate how young fans can be influenced. But to me, they're almost 'cartoon rock' in the way dear old 'Alice Cooper' once was. Someone like Courtney (For the record, Hole I do actually think, are quite good).. seems very 'f*cked up'.. yet has success and influence in a more subtle but more dangerous way...

As for someone saying here that maybe the young are losing their innocence..? Well, its sad but probably true. Drink, drugs and sex.. There's very few things that any of us don't know anymore.. It's very 'in your face'.. But thats where strong parental and responsible guidance comes to the fore (even if adults, me included, can't even get relationships right most of the time!!)

So what does that leave? Maybe just romance and dwelling on the deeper things in life are all that appears to be worth holding out for.. quality music, literature.. art.. That feeds the higher mind.

..And the senses being dulled are mine..

well I think manson may also be losing his shock appeal. This link from the onion (a sort of satirical newspaper) is quite worth your time and laughter. The link is: http://www.theonion.com/onion3703/marilyn_mason.html

I was sixteen when the big marilyn manson craze hit high schoolers and middle schoolers everywhere. I remember thinking, "Why can't people like better, more intelligent music like The Smiths or The Cure?"

that was pretty funny...i agree. i remember in middle school we used to all be either afraid of him, or loved him and flaunted it...or we didn't care, like me. now he's just ridiculous...i think he takes himself too seriously.

Oh dear Ruffian-weren't you the one that just criticised Travis because they were marketed for the masses? Maybe it's different in England but that's pretty much how Hole is for the US. But I agree that Courtney is f*ched up and very dangerous. But let's not get into THAT discussion again!

I remember sitting at work bored out of my mind watching as Jenny Jones gave yet another set of goth freaks a preppie makeover.

"Jenny, nooooo!!! that's the sort of person you want to SAVE these kids from becoming!"

But Eminem came along, shocked people in a different way, and I was @#!!!ing thrilled.
