The hall of fame (which is such an American idea, baseball crap etc) is a place for dinosaurs like Jagger / the Stones and other wrinkly rockers. But not The Smiths.

Can someone dig up from this messageboard what Johnny Rotten's comments were when he told the organisers not to bother inviting him and the Pistols.
His response was pure class.

Johnny Lydon's response to the Hall Of Shame was awsome. A few weeks after he sent that letter to that crap organization, he went on a radio show on Sirius satellite radio for a full hour to talk about it....he made me laugh the whole time with his vicious comments againt a wide variety of people, from Hillary Clinton to Billy joe Armstrong (calling him a fatty)....the whole show was just great time.


We all know that our sweet Moz is kind of an egotistical man, but I seriously doubt that he would ever accept to participate in such crap. The Smiths are too great of a band to be stuck in there with so much filth.

A good majority are going to say "WHO?" to the Smiths. not that The Smiths haven't contributed musically to the world, but I wonder if those people are trying to generate a few headllines on the off-chance that the entire band might re-form for it. well surely not every band in the Hall of Fame is uber-famous, like Dylan or the Stones, so I don't think that's really so much of an issue.

I don't really have a strong opinion either way, if they decided to accept it, I won't throw a fit about it. But at the same time, it would be pretty cool for them to just say FUCK YOU to the whole thing.

I think it's done like the Oscars. People have to vote for you. So to not get in you have to piss off all the voters rather than offend a small committee of people who then decide not to choose you.

I disagree. His response was the same tired, boring Rotten schtick we've gotten for many years now. Did he really think it was so punk rock to snub the RNR Hall of Fame? This coming from a man who had a show on VH1?

Recently, Patti Smith accepted the honor with grace and pride. True, she was hesitant at the beginning, but in the end decided to accept it with graciousness. This is a woman who defines 'individualism' in music, and of whom Morrissey is a great admirer. Not to mention, her performance of RNR Nigger at the ceremony was definitely more punk rock than anything Rotten has done in nearly 30 years...

If so bestowed upon him, I hope Morrissey accepts it with class...

I agree. She accepted the award in a very classy manner.

But as much as I love R.E.M., I didn't understand why they were inducted.

It would be nice to see the smiths be inducted. Their English "contemporaries" (e.g., Joy Division, The Cure, Depeche Mode) have been eligible for some time now and have not gotten the nod. I believe the only "new wave" acts to get in so far are the Talking Heads, Blondie, The Pretenders, and U2. I don't believe Roxy Music is in.

Please don't flame me for associating The Smiths with these other bands that I've mentioned. I understand that the Smiths are very unique and that Morrissey has often attempted to distance himself from these other artists. I just mention these bands because I think outsiders (non-fans) tend to lump these artists together. They do in fact share many of the same fans. I am a fan of several of the artists I mentioned.
