They are like Marmite, you either love 'em or hate 'em. John Peel championed them for a longtime, so surely they can't be that bad.

Bloody hell, I missed that news. Just looked on a few websites and sadly yes, the Palais is closing in April to make way for an office block.
Another historic London venue gone for good.
The Smiths played here once with Sandie Shaw coming on for the encore in place of Morrissey.....

There are only two gigs left, on Saturday is The Good, The Bad And The Queen (sold out). Sunday is The Fall.

Forgot to say in my drunken rancour the last song performed was Just Step S'ways off Hex Enduction Hour. The Fall heads stipulate this is the first time this has been performed live in 24 years!!!

I see Mark E Smith pretty much every week, having a pint in Prestwich (in North Manchester). People think he's a bit of an monster, but he always smiles at me whenever I see him. I just smile back and leave him alone.

Everyone knows Mark round here. You see pensioners in the pub pointing to that bloke in the corner with his pints & fags, saying "he's a popstar?....Give Over?" I've never heard him talking about The Fall ever, he just talks Pub Bollocks.

Jacque Louis David painted many paintings but because the average person in the street can't name one he was a rubbish painter?

Do you go out of your way to be illogical and wrong or does it just come naturally to you - the gift of some fuckwit genes or something?

Indeed the great man did. He called The Smiths the second best band ever from Manchester.

to not be commercially trained into popstardom like those poor sods with stars in their eyes doesn't mean one hasn't got a right to make a living out of singing one's mind . i salute mark e. smith , wholeheartedly, and will buy every record he does unheard , just like mozzer's

Frank Skinner interviews MES for Culture Show on Sat. Very good. MES looks genuinely flattered at one point.
